So I got around to making the big push to the end of the Arm campaign this weekend, and just finished it now.
I ended up with basically one single tactic, which pretty much matches what you guys said before: Build as many gunships as possible, send them all off in a group, and point them at one target at a time (prioritised visually by me). If they fail, then self-destruct any unnecessary other units so that I can make more of them than the first time, and repeat.
On the one hand, this deals with most of the issues I had. On the other, I'm more or less grinding my way through the game doing the same thing over and over.

...of course, I start the Core campaign back in you-can't-do-that-yet land, so I have some enforced variety for a while.
I just created a massive fleet of ships, and finally set sail to lay waste to the enemy base. We sailed all over the map, to eventually find... one enemy unit between me and my victory message. There was no enemy base; just a bunch of ships, the rest of which had already dashed themselves against my island fortress while I was building my fleet.
I must remember to send out scouts next time!

by the way can I just ask what res you've been playing this at? Seeing your posts makes me want to replay this, but I'd be pretty reluctant after having played the open-source version in 1920x1080 for so long. Is there a widescreen/high-res mod you have found or are you playing stock?

Hey that's good news, I might have to necromance this thread when I get around to playing it
