Everdearest all:
Thinking about bagging the old crusty mouse and "upgrading" to a wireless (or not) trackball. Any thoughts about this, in re Thief? Would it be an upgrade, or would I regret it forever?
Love,
Ponyboy

You'd regret it forever. While it's as useful as a mouse for regular windows things (maybe a little better because it takes less room) it is absolute rubbish for any kind of game. Maybe someone else can make it work gracefully, but I can't!

Nah, they can be used quite well - assuming you're used to it. I've used a regular mouse for too long to use them well, but my friend swears by his.
If I wasn't so happy with my mediaplay, I might pick up one of the hybrid versions (where the trackball is on the side of, as opposed to replacing, the mouse). If I think about it, I can see the benefit in mapmaking and the like - sort of faint, but it's there.

I've used a Trackball on thief since day one *all versions and permutations and FM's*. I've worn out two.
But you definetly need on with a "thumb" operated side ball.

Thanks for the replies. Those are all my thoughts and fears exactly.
The first time I used a trackball (thumbside), it was during a satellite image analysis class, and as soon as I was comfortable with it, I began to wonder whether there might not be more productive uses it could be put to ...
I'm glad to hear you've been using one from the beginning, Blackman. I think I'll be joining you soon.
The appeal of not mousing off the edge of the world atlas I have on the floor beside me in the dark, not to mention not having to clean mouse ball smegma (those filthy mouse balls!) off the rollers quite so often to ensure a smooth gaming experience -- it all speaks to me. It calls to me. It tells me what I must do ...

I've used a Logitech wireless thumb trackball for quite a few years now so using it for gaming is second nature now. I find the level of control is much better than with a mouse, so long the ball is kept clean and able to move around freely. The best thing about it, especially in fast paced FPSs, is that you can turn around quickly with a simple flick of the thumb rather than having to shove a mouse around.

Over the last few days I've been considering getting a trackball for gaming after using one properly for the first time, at work.
But I want to test them first. I was interested in the normal, non-thumb, trackballs though. Logitech marble is what I have my eye on. Doesn't you thumb get tired?
I also saw some crazy logitech 8 button gaming mouse that looks great and now I'm not so sure about trackballs.

That's the one Spitter. It looks great, and the reviews are very good. I need to get my hands on one now to see what it feels like. Question is where? There is no-where near me that seels it afaik. I'd have to order online :(
