I wandered down a little tangent about this game over in the Glorified Tech Demo thread but have decided to create a thread about the game. I found a rather interesting post-mortem article about it and thought that it might be interesting enough to cause some sort of discussion about the game.

omg Looking Glass people were involved. Well at least this designer was a LG guy.
Reading this and seeing the fans that are still fairly numerous over on that Trescom forum actually makes me want to give the game more of a chance.

I am actually playing my copy of the game now. And, yes, it is a direct result of the same thread. I was too ashamed to admit it, however. I AM COMIN OUTTA DA AD GAME CLOSET, YO.
That postmortem is gold, btw. Thanks for the linky.

Huh I didn't know Ex-LGS employees worked on that. Neat. I can see now why it ended up the way it did. I think if they revisited the idea of this game and remade it with today's technology, it would be pretty damn good.
It was a letdown when I bought it all those years ago, but it had some awe inspiring moments throughout. The first time you saw a huge Apatosaurus, finding wreckage and scavenging a gun from it, running across the monorail tracks to avoid the raptors below. Not to mention the physics. Great (but flawed) ideas and great atmosphere kept me from just hating the game or leaving it unfinished.

If you haven't already, you might want to look into some of the hacks there are for the game (over at trescom in the "Programming" sub-forum). IIRC you can modify the LOD distances to reduce the popping, I haven't used it myself because I played before it was available. Also don't forget patching.

The worst game I ever kinda enjoyed. Too much frustration

If you actually bother to get the fan made updates, patches and fixes from trescom it is really a very nice, atmospheric game, especially for the time.
There is even a whole fan made mod (maybe multiple ones) that are very much exploration - I think it was called tres isle or something i don't know - but i know they released a standalone demo to try and get people interested. There are lots of other levels too i think.
There is a nice ai ecology that was partly (fully?) disabled in the actual game cos there were some problems that they couldn't fix but trescom people managed to fix it and it's really quite nice.
I don't know much about it since it's on my "to play" list, but from what i've played it is actually rather good, especially that tres isle mod.
The thing is, people here, typical types have been all "HURRRRRRRR TRESPASSER WURST EVAAR" about it and as such tried to belittle anyone who tries to correct them, being completely closed minded about it all and not looking into the game further.
No doubt they prefer stale, linear and boring yet completely polished affairs such as hl2 and halo. Such are the sad times of gaming we live in.
If you can put the effort in and don't go in with a "hahaha this game is crap, i'm too good for it" attitude then you may find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Erm... You're completely not aware of the pot/kettle statement in your post, are you...

Not really as i have actually played both of those games to finish.

Not the point, really.

I did not go in with that attitude into hl2 though either - i really liked the first game. It really is not the same thing. I gave those games a chance. But hey just cos popular opinion is against me here on that, i must be wrong.
If you actually have something constructive to say rather than sniping, then go ahead.
