Mt. Holyoke is one of the Five Colleges in the consortium I attended (took a film class there once, it was pretty good) and I know a paleontology student who has probably taken a class with this guy. I can ask him if he's a fucking idiot, if it would help :P
I think you're being a little harsh - the self portrait thing is indeed a serious stretch, but as an idea the "kraken moving bones" thing isn't bad per say. True, it has nothing to back it up and therefore isn't as meaningful as more rigorous examinations, but it's not a bad IDEA. Course I don't know jack shit about this stuff so maybe I just can't seem the obvious falsehoods.

In 2005 in Japan researchers doing underwater exploration caught a giant squid on camera, and tried to capture it.
