I'm not sure if this breaks the rules or not, if it doesn't its certainly skirting them.
As most of you know, Sierra shut down the master servers for many old games recently (tribes 2 among them), and some clever folks have made a new master server to compensate. Understandably there is no CD key required for this self-made master server (they couldn't have done that had they wanted), and since the game was released for free a while back (with CD key's but they quickly ran out and quit offering that), that essentially makes it free.
Considering that the game doesn't take a CD key to install, anyone could download it from fileshack and install it and play the training missions, but with no master server there is nothing else, so I cant see that this should be breaking the rules too badly.
To get this up and working, go here to (
www.tribesnext.com) and download the multiplayer patch under downloads, if you have T2 already (unlikely). The full version of the game is also there for download (I believe it downloads the patch itself). The game installs in a super easy exe, no iso's or mounting, and its only 500 megs.
After patching, start up the game using the shortcut in the dynamix/tribes2/ directory (the shortcut on the desktop I don't believe will work, will try sierra updater thats been broken for about 4 years). It should give you a login page where you can create a new account (that is remarkably more secure than the old accounts interestingly enough).
You can DL the TWL and TWL2 map packs at (
http://www.chaingunned.org/) (and if you want a lol, read around in the wiki for an example of classic tribes 2 ego, particularly the article on V2). These are what are mainly used for classic pickup games, pm me if you are having trouble finding any others.
There are some servers up now, though not many. There is the possibility of some good pickup games, and there is a classic CTF 32 man game going right now and a pickup to start in about 15 minutes. Oh my god, there appears to be a nearly 64 player classic game going on in the SA goonsquad server (I've not seen a game of that size in years).
So now there is nothing to stop you from giving one of the most difficult and rewarding multiplayer games ever made a try! Hope to see you there.

With emphasis on the difficult. Christ, it might have been that I arrived very late with a bad connection at the Tribes party but I got mercilessly pounded over and over and over. I'd end up being a helpless catamite to even the loser one rung above me on the leaderboard. Teams would disown me and beg me to quit...
After a week, I gave up completely.

Its worth doing just so you can say you played it. Really, anyone who is egotistical about games and skill should have played it. After playing it, talking trash in most other things just seems silly.
This is probably best for people who already have played T2 (shakeylo is the only one I know), but its a great time to just try it out and see what the people who hate/love it are talking about.
But no, you won't just pick it up and run immediately, if ever. But its fun just to run around and play with vehicles.

In Aus we've happily continued playing, the shutting down of the auth servers hardly made a difference. You could just start the game in LAN mode and join server by IP. (Which was ok, because we only have one server in Aus)
But I guess this makes it easier for new players and for vets making a return.
Oh, for anyone in (or near) Aus, we generally get together on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

This is true, there have been several workarounds, but this is a fully functional master server that can preserve peoples names and stop smurfing etc. They are working on enabling DT for it too to prevent cheating.

well, I just installed this new patch out of curiosity, and saw there was a 32v32 game going on the goon server so I joined up. Of course it was a US server so I had the highest ping... but naturally, ended with the highest score
It was like I'd travelled back in time eight years, all these people I didn't know, lots of noobs asking what to do, and me not having to worry about teamwork, just shooting triangles for points. A very different experience to the tight, intensive games I'm used to, and can't say I'd prefer it on a daily basis, but hopefully we get a similar surge of interest here.

Hmm, have you checked out all the support forums, is this a known problem?
edit: Is this a fresh install? I know there have been some problems with UE's (usually on account creation). I was able to uninstall and reinstall right over the same place, so none of my scripts/mappacks/screens/recordings etc dissapeared. If this isn't a fresh install, I would suggest trying that.

Yea other people posted on the forum about the issue bot no fix was found :(
Also the game runs fine if I host bots, it just wont let me join servers (doesn't even go to the loading screen).
