I really loved Tribes and 2, though I was never any good at them. I'll be really interested to see what a modern interpretation of Tribes looks like. Infinite repeating terrain seems to have gone, but if the maps are big enough then that's nothing to complain about, really. The art style and stuff looks pretty standard, but that's Tribes, I guess :p.

You can only hold 10 Gold in a free account, cannot join guilds, and are limited to level 20.

And also can't use the auction house, which pretty much defeats the point of having gold.

I'll definitely give it a try, but I'm cautious - Tribes is all about switching out a variety of equipment, and even if something is "balanced" it will be more powerful by virtue of having more options. I'd rather just pay straight-up money.
But mostly we'll see if they get the gameplay right. Tribes: Vengeance was all fucked up (IMHO) purely through maps that were WAY TOO SMALL, making it more contemporary die-all-the-time shooter rather than the longer lifes, distances, and assault planning of earlier Tribes (particularly Tribes 2). So they can't go the arena route, gotta have Proper Big Playfields. And a decent player count - 64 at least.

I loved T2, I've had some of the best gaming moments there and it's definitely the pinnacle of team-based online multiplayer goodness, with vehicles and team building no less! there was just so much to do, from sneaking, heavy bombarding, mortars, full 3D gunplay, repairing/reinforing your base, setting up turrets, placing sensors, creating mini-bases somewhere behind a hill for your buddies to reinforce at between assaults, flag running... so many different roles you could play.
The video looks nice, but it kinda gives me the T:Vengence vibes. I.e. small maps, "casual" gameplay, limited and precise roles (rather than just tons of equipment you can suit yourself up from) etc. etc. We'll see. at least it's free to play so no loss there right?

(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq5a_2UKW2w) ASCEEEEEND!
Holy Shit, yes!
The hectic vertical combat, base infiltration, the generators / inventory stations / vehicle stations / turrets, the base and building architecture, the HUD icons and messages, the shriek/grav bike, using spinsufour to "rocket jump" and gains speed, even the voice chat system... it looks like the developers may actually understand what made the original Tribes 2 so great This video gets me hella excited.
On the downside, I didn't see much of base-building (deployable turrets and sensors) and the bases seemed painfully close to each other, reminding me of the craptastic Tribes Vengence (but then, it could be just the map, T1/2 had some small maps too). And while we're nitpicking, the jetpack doesnt seem as powerful (although it could be med/heavy armor), the classes looked to be predefined (but maybe you can make your own presets), and the shriek seems way too mobile and quick in its turns, more like banshee from Halo than its predecessor (I liked how in T2 it had a real sense of momentum you needed to "feel out" and learning to pilot it efficiently actually required considerable skill)
So it's free to play? I'm guessing this means lots of purchasable addons. Hmm, I can see Tribes lending itself almost naturally to such a model, with a huge variety of different "stuff" you can equip your dude with, from packs to weapons to granades to mines. Not sure how I feel about it, not too excited if I have to singularily buy each item I want at 99c a piece. Or if its not very balanced and turns into "free to play but pay to win." But if the core gameplay is solid... this may just be the first game to convince me to actually dabble into extra purchasable content model.

Shazbot and other vocal commands have returned!:D

That does look nice, but I think you can build up the speed a little too easily.
sNeaksieGarrett on 14/8/2011 at 14:27
Yeah, that does seem to be the case. (You were referring to the jetpacks going across the ground right?)
