omg I'm not alone in this world! do you also play with inverse mouse on?:p
Nope. When I grew up and my parents bought our first, shared computer I got used to using the mouse with my right hand and with default settings (since everyone else was right-handed).

Add another two to that, my GF and me both use mouse with right hand, although we are both left-handed. :) (And without the mouse inverse)

I've never seen any LCD that could display black as deeply as a decent-quality CRT. How on earth could it, when the screen must be lit at all times? I have a 17" samsung CRT that I'll probably keep around until it dies, just to play Thief in real darkness every now and then.

True - although LED backlighting can change this somehow.
Also, OLED displays would be a much better choice, but well have to wait for those (and they have a short lifetime :( ).

I refuse to use LCD for a number of reasons. It's CRT all the way baby. Too bad you can't find 'em anymore :(
Maybe not brand new, but used, they are a dime a dozen. People can't give them away. I know cause I've got a very nice 19 inch NEC MultiSync 97F ClearFlat CRT I've been trying to get rid of. Pawn shops won't even take them.

It's been sitting in the corner for 4 years now. I was given an NEC LCD1765 as a gift and never looked back.
And for those of you complaining about black not being black on an LCD monitor, it's only because of the backlighting.
What's not to like about LCD monitors? There's no static field to attract dust or shock you when you clean it, it's easier on the eyes, uses less power and generates almost no heat. Plus they don't weigh a ton or take up nearly as much space as a CRT.
A 19 inch CRT averages around 55 pounds. A 19 inch LCD weighs around 11 pounds.

Older LCD had their issues yes. Until you get a good quality LCD, the nay sayers are in the black. :p
I just ran through Shadows of Eidolon by masterthief3. That has to be thee darkest FM in spots, its like playing Doom3.
The blacks are the blackest on my LCD. Newer LCD's are better. Until people are really experienced the newer LCD's, be open minded.
I have both a CRT and LCD, I prefer my LCD.

Perception of black is subjective, not objective and relative to ambient light. If you're finding your screen isn't doing black enough blacks and can't adjust display settings sufficiently the solution is to increase ambient light a bit; which may sound like blasphemy to CRT fans, but remember that one of the principle reasons why you play Thief as dark as possible with a CRT is to minimise reflections which obscure low contrast scenes, LCD screens tend to be less susceptible to reflections.
There are some LCD screens that still suck at thief. My current PC is a Toshiba Laptop and the vertical viewing angle is far too fussy so getting consistent contrast fidelity across the screen really isn't possible. If you're shopping for a screen make sure the viewing angles are generous. Most LCD screens I've seen though are perfectly capable of displaying thief and some are really very, very good.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My laptop is also a toshiba and it's like you have to mess with the screen angle for 10 minutes just to make it bearable, but then the top of the screen is so dark you can't see anything and the bottom is white bright

So what you're saying is that if you're sitting in a completely dark room, and your laptop is displaying a purely black screen (like say you're looking down into a shadow), you can't even tell that it's on? Cause that's what a good CRT is like. Play Thief, and the shadows are as dark as ACTUAL darkness.
Unless you like playing thief with the lights on.
