Magic catnip is one hell of a drug.

My plan is to make a sidescrolling 2D platformer/shooter on a surreal island (with lots of smoking of magic catnip to be had), all in a quest to find some mythical artifact of allegedly great power. That, and high-tech nazi bunnies and pirate pitbulls are trying to stop you. I've wanted to make this project for a while (years), and after several false-starts (young and naive; no clear plan, no preproduction, no collaborators), but now I'm getting pretty serious with preproduction and already have collaborators, as well as a detailed design doc with a pretty clear plan outlined. It's still fairly early on, and updates will be slow, but I'm actually getting somewhere without a doubt.

Yup! That looks like a videogame character alright! Nice concept art. Have you decided what engine you're gonna use? Unity? GameMaker?

I feel a bit foolish due to not paying closer attention; I should've posted this in [url=]this thread instead of starting my own. Would a moderator be kind enough to merge this thread in? If not, I don't necessarily mind having a dedicated project thread, but updates will be infrequent until I have something tangible and presentable to show. Excessively hyping vaporware is always a bad idea and I have no intention of doing so.

Thanks. I wanted this character to be a likable comedic relief protagonist.

Quite honestly, I can't stand those engines (especially the latter). They both reek of cheapness and limitation to me. Depending on how convincing my proof-of-concept vertical slice demo is, I might have a shot at using the Retro Engine. If that fails, maybe the Headcannon Game Engine. Failing that, I might resort to Construct 2 or just attempt my own. Of course, I'm nowhere near that point yet, but it is certainly an important consideration.

Unity cheap? You could argue it falls a bit short of the UE4/Cryengine big guns from a technical standpoint (and the UI isn't exactly all that great), but...well...you have seen some of the things that have been produced with it, right? It's probably your best choice for a 2D action game, especially if you want to go multiplatform.
