I watched the film and could only compare it to the original. However you feel about Tron, whether or not you think it has no story or whatever, this is something they did right in every way.
I don't think Tron had the best story, but that didn't mean the movie wasn't entertaining. And I think it deserves its cult following because of all the reasons already mentioned.
There is one thing, though, that nobody has mentioned yiet and it surprises me.
Tron Legacy is a direct sequel. Not a re-imagining or a redux version. They picked up right where they left off and gave us the first movie (well I suppose the 2nd) this decade that is based on a movie older than 10 years that wasn't a friggen redo.
and as far as a sequel goes i think it was perfect. It had the special effects, the music is bloody fantastic, and the acting was great after a few lines in the beginning that were horribly delivered. This movie was just like Tron in every way, just cooler looking. And I think it was exactly what it tried to be. A good sequel.

I second that. I absolutely loved it. Sure the plots simple, but who cares it was a great movie. Other than Inception there wasn't alot of good movies this year.
And as someone who'd always wanted a Tron sequel, the movie gave me all the things I liked in the original, spruced up the graphics a shitload, added in some good fight scenes and to finish it off added in some damn excellent music by one of my favorite groups of the 90s.

I've only seen Tron once or twice. Many years ago. I barely remember anything from it. In spite of all these mixed reviews I am going to watch Tron Legacy with my wife and friends (there's nothing else in the cinemas here right now), and they have never seen the first film before. Is it necessary to know its plot before watching Legacy? Could anyone recommend some good (detailed?) summary of it?

bukary, here you go:

Not needed but definitely helpful.
Actually the only thing I really hated about Tron was the 3D, but I friggin' HATE 3D. I think it is completely stupid, the glasses are uncomfortable to wear for a good while, and it adds zero wow effect to a movie. I still remember Jaws 3D as a kid, and I really don't see a difference today in terms of adding to a movie. Yet everyone and their dog seems to want to churn out 3D bullshit.
End of rant.

Really enjoyed the movie, minus the 3D. There barely was any, which meant I had to wear those damn glasses for nothing the entire film.
On the plus side, the soundtrack and visuals were great. The plot was silly, but comparable to the original and that's all I expected. They probably could have trimmed out a few parts for a tighter film but overall, I'd recommend seeing it as long as you keep your expectations in check.

The whole light cycle sequence pissed me off. The '82 light cycle goes from 0 to max speed instantly, and turns 90 degrees. It was part of the metaphor for the setting - hard 1s and 0s, digital precision. The 2010 lightcycle was just a fancy ass motorcycle, lost all of uniqueness.

After my previous post I'll concede to the points made about 3D
I personally hate 3D. It screws with the colours and make the overall experience of the movie, crappy.
My wife was upset that they didn't have more things fly at you and really make you jump in your seats, but personally I would've been much happier to buy a regular old movie ticket and not have to wear those damn glasses that wash all the colours out and give me a headache.
so yeah.. I think the 3D in Tron was underused and what was there was boring. but I hate 3D anyway so... take that for what its worth.

After watching 6 3D movies in theaters, I've yet to see anything that justifies the additional price, muted colour palate, and slight headache at the end of the film. Problem is, the theaters around me are smaller and as such only play the 3D versions of films.

She could always wear sunglasses while you wing a glow-in-the-dark frisbee at her head.
I'm sorry, but 3D is the most retard gimmick since Smell-O-Vision. The only thing dumber would be 3D television.
