Re. 3D
I hope noone decides to resort to fallacies like "color was a gimmick back then when it appeared too". There is a huge divide between techniques which allow to improve immersion naturally and cumbersome ways to superficially add a dimension to the picture. As long as we won't be able to focus our eyes where we want and look at a scene just like we would in real life, movies can not technically make use of 3D as an additional vector of dramatic communication with the audience. Color is a medium in itself, just like sound, writing et caetera. Depth could be the same one day but not until a big shift in technology.
For people still fooling themselves, there can not be a good 3D movie right now and there won't be for years. The only good thing that current 3D tech might be doing is generating revenue for laboratories which are working on future 3D tech. But is it really happening?
Re. TRON L
I'll be seeing that in the next few days - hopefully in "2D" or maybe full IMAX 3D (as long as I'm not paying for it). I've got no expectations, especially considering the trailers. A little question to those who have seen it, without spoiling too much, is there an explanation given for the huge difference of look between the old TRON computer world (perfectly flat shading, barely any contrast on the character faces, strong influence of binary concepts - as was said before) and the new one (lightcycles create smoke [?!], many surfaces are textured with lots of contrast, lightcycles can turn like regular bikes)?
Also agreeing with Sulphur on the soundtrack. I love DP but they're not film scoremakers and thus did what they could, reusing work and inspiration from other soundtracks. I suspect Disney giving them strong requirements on the amount of electronic beats they could put in the soundtrack.

Nonsense.
It was very well done in Avatar.
I thought I said that.

Avatar was the closet thing we've had to a movie that used 3D well....

If the entire soundtrack had been like Derezzed, the movie would have to be one long rave. (Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, it's a standout track)
I liked the balance between tracks like Son of Flynn, End of the Line, Derezzed, Solar Sailer (which are predominantly electro) with the mostly orchestrated tracks of Adagio for Tron, Nocturne, Outlands, C.L.U., and then there are those tracks that strike a balance between the two like Recognizer, The Game Has Changed, The Grid. If anything I could have done with more of those blended tracks, orchestral pieces with either a digital edge or a thumping bassline, but as it stands I think it works pretty well.

Actually the only thing I really hated about Tron was the 3D, but I friggin' HATE 3D.
Don't you have any 2d theatres where you live?

The whole light cycle sequence pissed me off. The '82 light cycle goes from 0 to max speed instantly, and turns 90 degrees.

...Been an awful long time since you guys saw the original movie, eh? The light cycles turned like regular bikes once they were off their own game grid.

The statements are quite different.
You state that it was the "closet thing we've had to a movie that used 3D well."
I said it was done very well. It's not close, it's on the money. It's the redeeming feature of Avatar. Without the 3D it would just be another pretty sci-fi cgi no-brainer film. Well maybe not "just", since even in 2D it really looks lush, but it would be a shadow of itself.
I hear you on the blended tracks Scots. They remind me of some of the HL2 atmosphere pieces which themselves were excellent.

Only to the seriously autistic.

I'm not quite sure why it's supposed to take autism to distinguish between "very well done" and "not well done" (even albeit closer than anything else).

It has. That said, they were on the grid in that sequence. Plus, if the 90 degree turns are not a defining part of the setup, why is it called "the grid"?

Might be because the floor has a grid shaped pattern underneath it.

Literalists! Fuck me. Say what you want about the tenets of the impressionist movement, Dude, at least it's imaginative.
