Well, I took your guys' advice and started Deus Ex. Beat the 1st mission and finished the little episode after; now onto the 2nd mission.
must say (compared to ss2) the atmosphere, music and voices are dull, at least thus far.
Is mass effect like KOTOR? I enjoyed the latter game.

Keep playing. DX gets better, but you'll need to quit comparing it to SS2 because they're very different games.
As for Mass Effect, it pretty much is KOTOR- plot included.

I'm surprised people here are so indifferent to Baldur's Gate. is there anything worthwhile about it?

There must be something wrong with you if you don't like Deus Ex. Something akin to like, being a child molester or something.
I get put on a Deus Ex hate-register, and then worried fans can sign me up for spam? :(

I didn't like the atmosphere too much, though there's not much wrong with the dull voice acting when you compare it to the overacted and self-conscious approach to characterisation from this decade.

DX' voice acting runs the gamut from really well-done (I find Paul's VA to be pretty good, and also Walton Simons and a number of other characters) to really, really bad (just about everyone responsible for VA in Hong Kong needs to be shot.)
As for atmosphere, I think it's got plenty- I just wish there were more weather, like for example light snow in Paris perhaps.

I *love* Baldur's Gate. The infinity engine could perhaps use some elbow grease, and the plot has been done again and again since the game was released, but for what it is and for when it came out it is an absolute classic. I guess if you've read every novel in the fantasy section and played every second edition adventure and cataloged the tit size of every npc in Deus Ex it might not grab you, but if you're looking for a solid RPG it definitely works. As for TES, which you mentioned earlier, Morrowind is awesome, but it's the kind of game where you're only going to get out what you put in. You have to invest yourself in the world and your character in order for the fun of it to come out.

well, DX is sorta growing on me now...
I still want to try out Baldur's Gate at some point

ahhhhhhh!
I patched the game and now my save game crashes. Does anyone have a save game in Hell's Kitchen entering the warehouse from the rooftop?

If videogames were english class, Deus Ex and Vampire: Bloodlines would be required reading.
Buy and play them now.
Deus Ex and SS2 are very similar, with almost identical gameplay (combat, inventory, stat, etc.) systems. If find it hard to comprehend how someone could like SS2 but not Deus Ex.

I find it hard to comprehend how anyone could say SS2 and Deus Ex are honestly similar in anything more than basic UI.

Lesson learned: Patch BEFORE you play.
