Gametap has Deus Ex for free. I'm gonna play it finally.
Also, Fallout, though I'm honestly not expecting enthrallment there.

Fallout 1 is one of the greatest gaming experiences ever.

yeah, fallout 1 is the coolest game of all time, bar none
Fallout 2 is also awesome, though I think it lacks a bit of the charm of the original
As for DX, I've gotten into that game somewhat. ZymeAddict was on point in saying it is more than the sum of its parts. the game actually reminds me a bit of Mission Impossible for the N64 :p
I'm going to try BG some time for at least a couple hours and who knows about Mass Effect

Fallout 1 is one of the greatest gaming experiences ever.
Is it actually though? See, I didn't become a PC game player until around 2000, so there isn't a shred of nostalgia for anything older than that (well, Thief Gold, but I found that shortly after Thief 2).
You guys were mostly right about SS2 (my second playthrough went much more smoothly than the first), but most of the time when I fire up one of these old games everyone raves about, I can't help but think it would probably have been better had I actually bought it when it came out, and was more immersed in the atmosphere of the time.
It's like, I could tell you Lost Vikings is one of the greatest games ever, but when I first played it I was nine or ten, back when I had no prejudice or critical thinking skills. So when I play it now, of course it's still great, but I can easily see a modern gamer getting bored or frustrated by it.
Fallout 2 is also free, so I can get in on that if I like the first ;)

To be perfectly fair I didn't play System Shock 1 until 2002, and I didn't play Thief until 2004. It's not about how old the games are, it's how well they age, and Fallout 1 is one of those games that have managed to age quite well, possibly due to its relative simplicity compared to later cRPGs. Then again I played Fallout 1 back in 2000 so maybe there is some nostalgia there- it was part of what I call the "nuclear trifecta" of games I played a lot at the time: Duke Nukem 3D and Half-Life being the other two. Those games were a very big escape for me during a very bad year.

Fallout 1 is def. the coolest game ever.
it is just plain badass... and sinister
i think the height of my enjoyment in that game was reloading saved game time and again so i could explore all the different ways of completing a mission...
i.e. guy A says to kill guy B so first time thru I kill guy B and get reward from guy A... then next time through I kill guy B and get reward from guy A and then kill guy A, etc.

It's ok (not great) if you've never played a Bioware (or Infinity Engine) game before.
One thing that will make you tear your hair out when playing it, is hearing "You must gather your party before venturing forth." repeated ad nauseam.
I agree with Kagouti, if you've played Icewind Dale or Fallout, don't bother with BG1 or 2, it's more of the same. It's more like a stripped down version of the two I mentioned. I played Icewind Dale 2 before BG and I just can't finish BG. After a while I lose interest.

For some reason I love Fallout 2, but still haven't brought myself to play Fallout 1.
Edit: and honestly, BG2 is a far more engrossing game than Icewind Dale ever was.

How can you even compare Icewind Dale to Baldur's Gate? That's like comparing Painkiller to Half-Life 2.
Icewind Dale is a story-free action RPG for fans of statistics and tactical combat. Baldur's Gate series is an epic (if retroactively cliched) story with genuinely interesting characters AND some damn good tactical "squad" combat.

popcorn, no-brains, shallow fun entertainment recapitulating the last years of american sc-fi tv: mass effect
baldurs gate: the sheer magnitude of everything. words, numbers, buttons, squares, rectangles, party members, critical hits while healing
deus ex: play this game
