Anybody else find that this level is much harder to ghost than the later ones? The guards with short, predicatable paths that are easy to deal with when you're blackjacking are infinitely harder.

well the idea is to clear the path so that Basso can get through without dying. ;) Besides, I haven't had a probem with running into the house and BlackJack each guard without hesitation.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of trying to ghost the level?

That Mission cannot be ghosted, you see?

Have you guys played Thief II yet?

A mission cannot be truly ghosted if you have an objective to kill or knock anybody out. So, in order to properly end the mission, you have to K.O. some guards. The only simple way around the objective is to cheat by meeting all the other objectives, then pressing ctrl+shift+alt+end to skip to the next mission, but that's no good.
The AI are hard to bypass unless you know what you can get away with, if you know the longer and/or more complicated alternative routes, and have mastered the movement and quicksave/-load controls. It's possible to run right by a guard without getting a reaction. I've done it often and always by accident. I've not had the opportunity to experiment and make an art of it, yet, so I can't tell you how to do it at will.
You can hide in slivers of shadow and make more noise than you'd expect without alerting the AI.
You have to run and freeze at the proper moments, too. Crawling's fine, as long as you are in deep shadow.

yeah, i tried ghosting gathering at the inn last night. i just couldn't do it. i ended up knocking out every guard in the place except the two who hung out in the bar.
it was my first time through, though, so i'll probably have better luck the second time. amazing mission, btw. actually gave me a chill.

But standard ghosting allows you to kill and blackjack if an objective specifically requires you to. So you can blackjack 7 guards in this mission without busting the ghost-mode.

Or you could try the opposite of ghosting - with the no kill restriction. It's actually harder than it sounds on "Running interference" because you have to bait and wait on two of the guards... the first being the one you pickpocket from the dumbwaiter, the second being the one downstairs in the room next to the kitchen that you bypass the back-way.
Though taking out the one circling the front yard 'while airborne' is something of a art form in and of itself.
For REAL kicks, try aiming to get ALL of your knockouts 'while airborne' - That's REAL fun. (especially since every time you land from a jump they all come a runnin)

Hmm, sounds fun. The best airbourne I ever had was in Shipping/Recieving, jumping off a catwalk and nailing a guard perfectly.

You too? I don't know if I'll ever be able to repeat it, but I was also using a slowfall potion. It was one of those rare moments. I hadn't yet learned what the game engine would let me get away with so I was being very careful.
