TSLRP (The Sith Lords Restoration Project): About damn time!! - by LancerChronics

I dunno, that's like saying it's pointless to spend hours making a fanpatch for a really buggy RPG, i.e. Bloodlines. It's a labor of love.
Stitch on 2/10/2009 at 18:05
Well, it's not pointless, exactly, as at the end of it all some accomplishment has been achieved, but for what? So people can more effectively play a video game you had no actual input on?
Life is too short to waste time on this shit. Create your own things.

I'm sorry, but your argument is stupid. You're basically saying "why bother fixing these old games, you're not making anything new blah blah"
If nobody made fanpatches and mods then nobody would continue to play these old games (or, in some cases, nobody would play them at all) and a game like Bloodlines wouldn't get nearly the acclaim or love it deserves.
I don't even know what you're getting at with "create your own things"- are you saying they should make their own game?

I'm sorry, Stitch, but I'd very much say that your point here is outright dumb.
Some people get enjoyment out of fixing a game whose potential is buried in tons of bugs and cuts. Some people have fun doing remakes of old games. Some people get a kick out of being in a band that does cover versions of old rock tunes.
None of these create something completely new (although I'd say that no one does - everything is made up of existing things to a larger exten than is usually acknowledged), but they're using their craft, honing their skills, they're having fun and they're creating something that others can also enjoy.
It doesn't take much in the way of imagination or brains to understand why they're doing it. Not everyone can or indeed wants to create something from scratch. Do you also piss on people who brush up old, fading paintings or who fix up 18th century furniture?

I'll admit this is kind of a shitty thing to say, but I honestly find the idea of investing so much time and energy into "fixing" someone else's game kind of depressing.
Fuck you too, buddy.
CCCToad on 2/10/2009 at 19:26
Lets direct our rage at the appropriate direction: at publishers who want games released in a buggy, unfinished state, instead of the people who try to fix them.

Which would be absolutely fine with me, at least in regards to what I personally am responsible for. There are old games I love dearly that never really attained an audience--"Sacrifice," for one--but I couldn't fathom spending years of my time working on an upgrade that will make someone else's game resonate with a new audience. I don't question the value of the service that is being provided, but at the same time it really doesn't seem worth the hours, days, months, and years required to make it a reality.

Sure. Or whatever it is they want to make.

Who is pissing on who, here? Settle down, I'm not invalidating the project here, just expressing that I personally don't understand the mindset that goes into this sort of endeavor, and, yeah, I think it's a waste of time, albeit a harmless one.
I'm not saying projects like this are worthless or the people involved are pathetic--it takes admirable discipline to see something like this to completion and as a gamer I can reap the rewards of these fan patches. And if the people working on it are enjoying themselves, then more power to them. It's certainly more productive than watching television, after all.
But I just don't get it.

You're just mad because you know it was an idiotic statement and I called you out on it but you don't like to admit it because it was me who did the calling out.
