I have a Voodoo5 and I also find many fan missions rather dark. I just turn up the brightness control on my monitor temporarily. I know it's not a proper gamma correction, but it helps.

I'm not cranking up the light as the levels were both quite bright when I built them, there is something wrong with your video card or you've got a business monitor. (As in business monitors will not let you adjust their gamma settings, because there factory settings are set for those who need to do word processing and thats it.)

Firstly, belboz, this mission is amazing. Fantastic. I thouroughly enjoyed Errand Boy, but this just takes it to a new level. The hints and clues that aren't actually objectives give this such an immersive quality. You've constructed a totally beliveable city, and you've accomplished the tricky task of having no one path feel any "better" than another. Often you can kind of tell the path that the designer wanted you to take - not here.
However, after reading the spoilers, I have a question or two:

Spoiler:
Ok, everyone's talking about the tombs, a transporter, and knocking people out... in the first mission. On Expert, you can't knock people out, unless you flipped the switch in the first hotel room, and the only boat I found was the Captain Markham-y Mechanist sail boat... I've found all four skulls, and I've finally explored the rest of the city to my (semi)satisfaction, and am in the process of working my way through the Mechanist compound and warehouses. I guess my questions are:
1. With the sub, the temple, and the skull placement, are you guys talking about things in "Up Shit Creek," or am I just missing a LARGE part of the first mission? Does "Up Shit Creek" start after you stow away, or is that still part of "Shore Leave"? What I'm asking is, should I find the tombs and the sub before stowing away on the boat?
2. As I left the burrick cave, there were two ladders and a steam grate (this could also be how you entered the burrick cave). I opened the square grate but couldn't hop-crouch into it... where does that lead, and how could I have exited from that square grate?
3. In the tunnels near the patrolling thief, where I found the explanation of the skulls, there were rooms beyond the one I was in. Are those accessible, and if so, from what direction?
4. Try as I might, I don't think I caught the "scripted sequence" near the beginning that Belboz mentioned in the DarkLoader text. What was it, just out of curiousity?
5. This isn't a question, just a comment: that Mechanist compound/warehouse is obnoxiously wonderful. A great challenge, and tons of fun.

Again, just a brilliant mission. This one might be worthy of a Gold.

Zaphod, you wouldn't happen to be the same bloke who used to lead Rats! mod?
Zaphod on 1/9/2001 at 15:07
I'm gonna guess that I'm not, given that I'm not sure what that meant. So, unless I've just repressed those painful, painful memories, let's go with "no." ;)

Well, I can't answer all of your questions, but I can answer some.
Spoiler:
1.) Those things are all in Shore Leave. There are 2 ways to the sub (that I have found). Don't worry about it, you'll get there. You don't have to finish the skulls, etc. before you find the sub.
Questions 2 and 3 are linked. If you go into the room just before you go down the hall to the room with the skeleton and the scroll about the corpse, you will see a lever on the wall. Turn it and the ceiling opens and a ladder comes down. If you climb up there and follow the passage, you will end up on the other side of the window in the wall of the room you found the scroll in. Continue on down these passages, and you'll come to a room with a door blocked by a fallen beam. Just before you go into that room, in the passageway, there is a spot where you can stand and mantle up into an opening with a grate. That's the one that opens into the room with the ladders.
I'm just guessing at the answer to questions 4. Belboz would have to tell you to be sure what he meant, but I suspect it's the scene in the Mechanist warehouse. There is a fight between the thieves and the robots in there. I haven't gotten there quickly enough to see it yet, but I know Silver Sorrow has and apparently it's quite interesting to watch. I'm going to try to get there before it starts next time. If you get there later, you see the remnants of the battle by a big crate. There are several dead thieves and some bots and mechanical spiders grouped around them. :)

Need some help downloading this. Like the problems described above, I get program code downloading as a text file which is unrecognizable as a Thief Mission.
I don't think it's my browser. Typically Netscape. I've downloaded hundreds of missions over the last two years and this is a first.
Thanks.

OK, finally successful download. Netscape browser wouldn't work. Kept doing it as a text file. Internet Explorer worked OK. Am playing it now.
Wow! This is some mission! Some of it looks familiar??? Deja Vu?
belboz on 2/9/2001 at 01:09
Zaphod, the semi scripted sequence is the battle between the thieves and the robots.

Need help in the second level. Belboz this is amazing! I love it! I thought that these two missions weren't going to be out for a month or two and so you suprised me. Well, I have been spending most of my free time playing these missions so it must be good . Well, here is where I get stumped:

Spoiler:
I have gotten to the point of doing to snake-head ritual. All heads are now in place but I have no idea what to do next. Dr. Jones says that the ape/burricks cut him and wiped his blood on his face after signifying that the Dr. was the center square, then they supposedly washed him in each of the 4 pools. I don't know how to simulate this! I have tried using the mech's body and the kings golden skull but they don't work. I know that there is a secret passage in the building to the right in that area, its on the second story and has a skeleton in it. Does completing this ritual open that door? Please help!

Belboz, I must say that you have done an incredible job on this fm! I think your S&R abilities are great! Thanks you for what you have done for the thieving community.
