You were in the right place when you were up above in the streets. There's a sign that you can frob that opens a door. :)

Has anyone played shore leave/up shit creek?
I just can't find all golden skulls with the souls of the Brothers.
I found the soul of brother Phol, Xil and Qix, but I can't find the fourth golden skull.
Does anyone know where to find it?

Welcome to the forum, Frisco! The skull you are missing, the Soul of Brother Sol is
down in the caves below the sewer tunnels where you find the burricks.
(To read the blue section, put your cursor at the beginning of it, then hold down your left mouse button and drag across it to highlight the text.)
The easiest way to get down to that section is to
go back to the top of the hill near where you start. There is a drunk guard standing outside a locked door. Go in the door, turn right (I think) and go through another door to a courtyard. There's a sewer hatch that opens and you can climb down into the sewer tunnels. Follow the waterway to a short set of stairs leading up to an area where there is a huge, metal hatch cover in the floor. Look up above it and you'll see some wooden ceiling beams. Rope arrow up and flip the switch you find up there. That opens the hatch, then jump down through it and you'll fall into a pond of water. Climb out and you're in the burrick area. You'll have to explore the tunnels to find the way out, but it's not difficult.
Enjoy!

I've been playing this level off and on for about 5 days now, and all I've accomplished was collecting 4 skulls and around 3300 in loot. Only 2 objectives and neither have been ticked off. I was reading other threads about this FM and it almost seemed like I was playing a different level. What is this about a submarine?? There was a ship I looked around in, that's all. I came to a transporter room with a small gold plate on the wall you can frob, but no explanation on what to do. I was at the graveyard and the only reason I knew to put some roses on one of the graves was that it was mentioned in a previous thread. I didn't come across any instructions to do so. It looks like the cargo bays are numbered, based upon the key I got from the grave, but all the cargo bays look the same, and aren't numbered. Unless I'm confusing cargo bays with warehouses.
Very early on, I came across a locked door that I've yet to open. It was in the sewers. You climb down a ladder to a dead end with a door.
Another problem is those square grates in the walls sprinkled throughout the level. Two opened up alright, but I couldn't manage to get into them. One of them was on the roof off the church or the building next to it.
Finally, with four skulls in my inventory, I'm led to believe that what I have to do will be obvious when I go to the church. I went to the church, saw 5 haunts, 4 with colorful fog for heads, and decided that I guess I have to place one skull onto each haunts' shoulder. Well, that didn't work out very well.
So, 5? cargo bays, 4 skulls that I don't know what to do with,3 grates that open but I can't access, 2 transporters, 1 submarine ...and a partridge in a pear tree. Man, I guess I played this level in some kind of screwed up order.

I seem to be on the right path now. Many questions answered. Like dominoes falling, finding how to get into the snakeroom led to my current position....inside the submarine. The 4 skull problem I solved after I posted this thread last night. So hopefully, things will tidy up as I progress.

LOL! This missions is pretty much "open". When Belboz released it, he said it was sort of an experiment, because it didn't have much in the way of objectives, but there were lots of things you could do that weren't objectives, like the skulls.
Okay, for the skulls:
When you go into the church with the haunts, walk through the shadows and get as close as you can to the appartition at the front. There's a scroll lying on the floor by his feel. Read it and then the front altar moves aside. Run like crazy and climb down in there before the haunts get you. You'll find coffins down here, one for each skull. The skull goes on top of the coffin. You'll know when you've done it right because it disappears.
The ship:
There are two secret hiding places on the ship, one in a crate and one in a bedroom. You can use either one to stowaway and get to the sub. First you need a key to unlock the secret compartment though. That key is worn by the guard that patrols in the Temple of the Spring.
Some of the square grates are much easier to get OUT of than into. There are a number of ways to find entrances to them, but for the most part, they only give you alternate ways to get from A to B. Nothing important.
Transporter room:
This is another way to the sub, as an alternate to stowing away on the ship. Once you've done the thing with the skulls, you get into a treasure room. In there, you'll find a "rotted body part" that you can pick up. Take it back and jump down out of the secret room. Now look around for notes and they will give you a hint of where to use the body part. When you figure that out, a big metal door opens and inside the room behind it, you'll find some "Ancient coins". You use one of those on the gold wall plate that you found and it activates a transporter that takes you to the sub.
I hope that helps clarify things a bit. :)

Thanks for all that typing Nightwalker....I think you were responding at the same time that I was replying to my own message. Many things were cleared up for me.
One thing that sticks in my mind though....that locked door down in the sewers. You had to remove some boxes in order to access the door which leads down a ladder to a dead end. Nothing I have opens it, but it must be important in some way. Similarly, the jail bars that prevent you from accessing other parts of the sewer seem to be frobbable, but the lockpicks don't open them. Are these just teasers, or is there something back there. I haven't found the one secret to this level yet, and I'm thinking this is where it is.
Nightwalker on 5/10/2002 at 17:12
The secret is in
the Mechanist Warehouse.
I won't tell you exactly where, unless you ask.
The gates in the sewers don't open, as far as I know, and that door opens in Normal but not any other difficulty levels. It's just a shortcut from the sewers below. It's at the end of the room with a fallen beam across it. :)
Yes, I'm sure I was busily typing just as you posted, but I decided to leave everthing here for future reference. :)
The mechanist warehouse....I HATE that room.
When I first encountered it, my immediate thought was "this is probably where the secret is". Sadly, my intuition was correct. Now I have to go back there and
tease those frisbee-throwing spider thingys.:)
