I don't have any idea why you wouldn't be able to put it in place if you've already placed the recharged crystals where they belong. At least you can resort to Dromed when you hit a bug! :)

It's obvious, first, that Belboz and I have minds that work entirely differently, because his missions always do this to me
Playing on Hard, I've gone over the waterfall and taken all the different keys from the buildings around the lake, with the pad in the center. Not sure what to do now though...none of the keys works on the center (submerged) pad, and I can't seem to place any of the keys in the niches outside in front of each of the buildings...any gentle nudges as to what direction I should look now would be tremendously appreciated.

“Use” the “Key to the Four Winds” on the plate in the water (Maybe you weren't quite close enough?). Then swim over to the south side, climb out and enter the building. Placing the key opened holes in the floor on each side.

Bah, I figured those were for something, but I'd run out of ideas. Will give it a go--and many thanks.

At least I've made progress, having put all the keys except the fire key in their place, and having been to the spider temple also, but when I picked up the plaques, there was no fire plaque..I'm assuming this has something to do with the fact that I can't find a place for the fire key, because the key of red flame (I think it was) in the fire temple. What am I overlooking?
Thanks.

I'm in a bit of a hurry and I haven't played this one for ages, so I've just pasted a bit of my walkthrough below that applies to the Fire Key. Hopefully it will make sense to you!
From here on in, I prefer to use the rooftops to move around as much as possible as it’s easier to avoid the zombies. Sink a rope arrow into one of the buildings and climb onto the roofs. Make your way across to the south side. If you look down at about the middle, you should see a zombie standing by an exit out to some water. That’s the one you passed as you left the area in front of the Mine Company buildings. Just to the right is a low wooden wall. Jump down onto it and then slide down on the right (W) side of it (The opposite side from the walkway to the water.) and you’ll see some wooden stairs. One set leads into a small room, which is empty. The other set takes you up to the ramparts so head up. Inside the rooms here you’ll find some water arrows and some broadheads. Go back outside, downstairs and rope arrow back up to the rooftops. Head east along the edge of the roof, turn to the left (N) when you reach the corner but don’t go far and look down.
Fire Temple:
There’s another low wooden wall you can jump down onto. Slide off on the right (N side and walk to the left (E) into the Fire Temple. There’s a haunt patrolling in here who is wearing a purse, worth 35g. (3575). Take care of him then go up the stairs on the north side of the lava. The door on the left leads into an office where there are some books to read then continue along the walkway into the end room where you’ll find Mine Records Pg. 41 – 42 lying on the floor. Read them then “use” the “Key of Red Flame” on the plate in the middle of the room. The star door on the far side will open and you’ll be on the upper level of the Fire Temple that you saw when you first entered this section. The Key also opened a door down near the ground but before you head down the stairs, go over to the balcony and pick up Mine Record Pg. 43 – 44. Reading these will get you the new objective to find the Fire Proctor’s jewel encrusted weapon. Go down the stairs and find the door that opened. Inside the first room on a platform to the left there’s a green rolled tapestry, worth 150g. (3725), a gold statue, worth 75g. (3800), 2 black jars, worth 40g. (3840), and 2 green jars, worth 40g. (3880). Take a sword, worth 300g. (4180), from the skeleton on the left platform. This is the Fire Proctor’s Jewel Encrusted Sword and the objective to find it will complete. Go into the second room and “use” the “Key of Fire” on the plate in the central pedestal. That’s it for here, so go back up the stairs, through the rooms and out to the rooftops of the wooden building again.

If you have all four,
then carry them back to the temple where you first entered and met with the guy that gave you your room key. You will need to open a door on the other side of the large open area where the stairs are. At the end of this hallway lies the room where you will power up the crystals, but be careful, there may be a few surprises along the way. :ebil:
Is it the hallway
with the mechbot patrolling that leads to the room with the 4 pedestals
or the room with the
mechanical spider
? I've gone to both and either I can't frob anything, or I
put the crystals on the plinth and nothing happens, and I can't retrieve them.

[...] either I can't frob anything, or I
put the crystals on the plinth and nothing happens, and I can't retrieve them. You're speaking of the mission in a distant future, I believe. I played this a long time ago, so my memories are not the best anymore.
My old notes say that I had to
recharge some crystals. The room where I did that was located near the place where
I met Mr. Jones.
Recharging the crystals will take several minutes, so maybe you just have to wait longer after putting them on the plinth. Maybe you don't even have to take them off the plinth again, but just find a place where the repaired portal reappears. That's almost everything my old notes for
Parrelex Paradox say.

Recharging the crystals will take several minutesI left them for nearly an hour, and the objective still didn't tick off. If anyone still remembers this mission, could you please give a daft taffer step by step instructions?
