just as sycamoyr above, i have often thought it would be a good idea to have a FM guide to help people find FMs that appeal to their different likes...however it is possibly far too big a project for one person to take on alone, less alone with all the detailed info that sycamoyr is trying/managing to include.
IDEA:- why not get the community to pool together, whereby anyone can post a guide on an individual FM. the guide
template would need to designed and hosted by TTLG and would need to include the following
1. mission type:- ie Mansion fm, church fm, town fm, pagan fm, puzzle, key hunt, hammerite fm, thieves highway etc
2. mission size:- small, medium, large or multi-part
3. mission toughness:- easy, average, hard or tough
4. mission play factor:- ie confusing, linear, ghosting, loads of fighting fm, bit boring etc
5. mission star rating:-here i would suggest no more than 3 different star rating system otherwise there would be too much bickering as to what the fms star rating should be ie. ok but nothing to write home about, typical/average fm and absolutely essential to have in your collection
6. suggestion as to which level of play the player should attempt...hard, expert or ghost
7. finally a short summery of the fm...say no more than 50 to 100 words
obviously all these ideas and others can be added to, but the point would be to have a simple/small to read and easy to use guide that would give new players an excellent overview of the fm, as well as being easy to contribute to for those who wish to add to the guide.
for this to work we would need to ask TTLG to set it up and run it alongside the fms on the cheapmissions site
any ideas or comments......esp from any moderator as to the viability of this would be helpful ( im sure this idea has been kicked around before and quite possibly kicked into touch ) if however it gets going i have gone through all T1 and TG fms in the last 6 months and am now trawling through T2, having played about 100 of them so would happily contribute to this guide

i know about that listing, and that is all it is, a listing of fms by the type of game. a FM guide would give everyone a lot more information especially for the lesser known fms a lot of which are very much worth playing. it would be the difference between the headline in a newspaper and the 1st couple of paragraphs to give the reader a lot more information on the story
and yes i know you can read the individual threads on each game but there is a lot of info in the threads that you often have to read before you get the full drift of the game and you also risk picking up a number of spoilers that maybe you would rather not read before you play the game
the idea of a members guide would be that it should be no bigger than my original post above if not a little smaller. precise, easy understand and very easy to quickly see whether this is an fm for you

It sounds like what you want is a Thief FM Wiki, kept up by the community. The Dark Wiki already has at fairly complete list, here: (
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/FM:T2_List)
That example is T2 FMs, but there are also lists for T1, T3 and TDM missions there. I suggest that a group of folks here just dedicate themselves to adding the info you suggest to the listings there as needed, and adding missing missions etc.

Well, that's not quite all it is. At the very least, it lists missions by type of enemy as well. But I understand what you are looking for. There is also (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124349) this thread which, while not exactly what you mean, has a great deal of easily (usually) accessed info on a great many FMs.
But I wish you luck in your endeavor. It would be nice to have such an archive.

I would suggest that this is unlikely to satisfy everyone. Why not just allow each person to rate the mission on a scale of 1 to 10.

TTLG has nothing to do with cheapmissions. That site is run by epithumia and has no affiliation with TTLG (except the coincidental one that epithumia also happens to be a moderator here). But he is sometimes too busy to keep the site updated regularly. And I don't quite understand why it needs to be there.

I really like the idea, I've thought about this myself at times. I think Yandros' idea to get the Dark Wiki up to date is a good way to go. I do have some nitpicks about the format. You'll probably want multiple people to weigh in on the type of info that gets added.

This stuff is pretty subjective. With multiple authors, descriptions of various FMs could vary dramatically. I think it would be more practical to note things like whether anyone has ghosted the mission. Missions that everyone can agree are very difficult, such as Sperry's Tuttocomb's Tomb, can be noted as such. Missions that are drastically longer than normal etc. I don't think it's very useful to force yourself to categorize something's difficulty or length when it's within a normal range.

Not a big fan of user ratings. I think a binary Recommend? Yes/No would be a little better. Or if numbers/stars are given they should be accompanied by a written review. I use the rating tags in FMSelect, but they are really only useful to myself. A lot of people would be confused by what my 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 5 star ratings mean because it's completely arbitrary and only makes sense to me.

Well wouldn't that be also the case, if you knew what enemies the FM has, how big it is, what kind of place(s) you are going to be in and does it have horror or other special elements? I would like to have a tag system, where you could choose some simple tags based on your daily preference, like place, just for choosing your mission for the day, but not for hoarding information before even giving the mission a go.
Okay, I know you can't help but feel a bit disappointed more than often you'd like if a mission wasn't exactly what you expected. But you can't sum up the "atmosphere" of the mission without spoiling it. One way to get good missions would be recommendations. That's at least what we do with my brother (with video games and music in this example). We both know each others' tastes and if we find something the other would also like, we recommend it to each other. That way we end up with good media with minimal spoilers.
Sidenote: I've spoiled a lot of movies and FMs, and whatnot, by knowing beforehand that it was going to be excellent or horror.
And one of my favorite quotes from TV series "Big Bang Theory" Sheldon: "You told me it's mind-blowing, so, my mind is going into it pre-blown. And once a mind is pre-blown, it cannot be re-blown."

@yxlplig if you would like to help refine the list of "types" or tags as they are called on the wiki, the current list of types are (
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/Property:FM_Tag) here listed under "allowed values".
As for ratings, they are more hassle then they are worth and can also be gamed. It would be more useful to have tags like: finished, unfinished, tested, untested, confusing, requires walkthrough.

thank you tannar, the above thread is very much more like what i had in mind, but in 2 years of playing Thief fms i had never come across this web page, and so guess a lot of others have not either.....is there any way that it can be promoted for wider accessability
Tannar on 14/2/2014 at 08:59
My guess is that most people here know that thread well. I'm surprised you never saw it in two years here. It's listed in the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139559) Thief Fan Mission Links thread which is stickied at the top of the page.
