First , take a look at this :
(

I'm not a stinking pirate loser, thank you. Now that's that cleared up, please read on. I need help running the game without the disc. I know we can't discuss these things on the forums in case some moron then reads this thread and uses the info to make illegal copies blabla. Well, if this gets locked, only fair enough. This is more in the nature of a shout to say : if anyone can think of something, pretty please, send me a PM.
The full story :
- I need to run this with no CD because for some reason when I play with the disc, the game crashes often. I don't know if it's my DVD reader on the way out, the disc seems in good shape. I had no such problem with SS2, though it seems to use the same engine. The crashes are pretty serious too since all I can do when it occurs is hard reset.
- I have found a fixed THIEF.exe that works like a charm. I can run version 1.33 with no CD. HOWEVER...
- I have a graphic card that gives me the "Direct 3D does not accurately report memory usage blah blah" error. The solution for that, found on these forums ( thanks again ) is... a fixed THIEF.exe. ( safe_texture_manager, which works for Thief 2 & SS2, does not seem to work for TDP ).
See what I mean? The only way I can play this with anything remotely resembling stability is to play with the no CD patch in Software mode. Now I'm not super-fussy about graphics, the models are perfectly fine in Software mode, but the decor is really ugly and more importantly lighting & shadows are not very defined. Which is annoying in Thief, to say the least. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to fire away, because I'm stuck. Thank you for your time. Now the bets are open on how quickly this gets locked.

Have you tried the FAQ?
I believe this is a common problem.
I know how to get Thief working without a disc, but I'd rather not specify unless it's absolutely necessary.
Try this first.
Code:
safe_texture_manager
ObjTextures16
TerrTextures16
Make a copy of dark.cfg. Then on of of them, try typing all of the above lines in and saving.
The "texture" lines improve the appearance of certain textures, I believe.

I don't think you need a fixed Thief.exe to run Thief without a CD...

Nope. :erm:
:Cough:
[SPOILER]install.cfg[/SPOILER]
:cough:

Ok, tried it, but no luck, I still get the Direct3D error.

Sonds like this could fix my problem, I tried fiddling with the file mentioned but I could not get it to work. If anyone wants to PM me the details, thee most welcome. Thank you for your trouble.

See this line in install.cfg and darkinstall.cfg?
cd_path d:\
Comment it out like so
;cd_path d:\
I aso remove some of the extras further down in the file, though I'm not sure if it's necessary.
So
movie_path E:\Thief2\movies+D:\movies
becomes
movie_path E:\Thief2\movies
This information can be found by searching anyway, so I'm hardly doing any harm here. And you clearly have the CD yourself. :cheeky:

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hmm strange things are happening :erg:
- if I use the original Thief.exe ( 1.33 patch ), it stills asks for the CD, despite the changes I made to install.cfg
- if I use the fixed Thief.exe for my video card problem ( which is what I want to do really ), with the changes to install.cfg, it no longer asks for the CD ( it's almost as if both .exe files looked at different .cfg files... ), *but* it crashes first thing on the main menu ( Thief.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close... ).
:( :(
Edit : Yessssssssss nailed it in the end. There was a very peculiar trick to be done in the cfg file... Thanks a bunch everyone. It's smooth, it's beautiful, it's stable. The time is ripe for a bit of burglary.
Edit 2 : No. No... Looks like the problem did not come from the CD after all. Don't know what's wrong but the engine does not like my computer for some reason. Hangs after a few minutes of play, systematically. My system has been freshly formatted and is very clean, running ever so smoothly, but Thief is just a no go. It has crashed in software mode as well. Well that's Thief in the "can't play it" cupboard, alongside IW. I'll try Thief 2, and pray.

Sorry for double post, it is meant as a bump more than anything. Since after all my troubles Thief kept on crashing anyway, I installed Thief 2. It works. For real this time, I completed the first mission and all. Excellent game, which makes me even more disappointed that I'm not able to play the first. I wonder, could there be a way to play the Thief 1 missions using the Thief 2 engine? Darkloader, or any other trick? If not, can anyone who owns Thief Gold out there thell me if it is stil the old Thief engine or is it the "revised" version that was used for Thief 2? I'm clutching at straws I know... Thanks again.

It may be possible with stome strategic copying, but I wouldn't rely on it. The scripts and the res folder would need to be those of the original Thief, as some don't appear in Thief 2.
Try it. Maybe it will work!

Did you put empty spaces between the lines of code?
Like this...
Oh and, in case I'm confusing you,
the words in caps and brackets that are italicized are meant to help indicate what the lines of text should look like; they aren't to be written down.
Code:
[LAST LINE OF TEXT IN FILE]
[EMPTY LINE]safe_texture_manager
[EMPTY LINE]ObjTextures16
[EMPTY LINE]TerrTextures16
