I'm not a huge U2 fan. Just like everyone else in the world I like a few of their early songs. Desire, One, With Or Without You, etc. Mostly I was looking forward to the new album just because it meant new episodes of (
http://www.earwolf.com/show/u-talkin-u2-to-me/) U Talkin' U2 To Me?, but since the boys decided to go ahead and shove their album into the digital libraries of every iTunes user in the world (that's kind of a ballsy move.
"You guys listen to U2? You do now!") I decided to give it a spin.
It's not bad! It's got what I like most in an album: a bunch of good songs! After 2 listens I've decided that the first 7 out of these 11 tracks are pretty solid, and #9 and #11 aren't bad either. Best of the bunch is probably Raised By Wolves, a song about a childhood friend of Bono who died in the bombing of a record store. It's heartfelt but also has a really great scream-along-friendly chorus.
Anyone else give it a listen?

While I have nothing to say about U2, have the Pro Bono jokes been done to death yet?

No, actually! Please, you do the honors. :D

Hey youngster, I wouldn't exactly consider these their "early" songs. They had at least 4-5 albums before all of that stuff.
I've been a U2 fan since the beginning, but I'll admit I haven't taken the plunge on the new album yet. Soon.

Oh my... when I thought No Line On The Horizon was their worst album (not counting Rattle and Hum), they make this. It's unlikely they'll ever repeat the quality of Achtung Baby, The Joshua Tree or All That You Can't Leave Behind again...

I hope they come up with an app that allows me to tell U2 songs apart from each other.

Ha, U2 seems to be the new fashionable band that everyone loves to hate. I wonder how Coldplay and Nickelback feel about this.
(For the record (pun intended), I like Rattle & Hum)

As much as the album's release is a fiasco, I don't know why people bitch so much. They got a full album for free. If the songs themselves didn't suck so much, I'd call that a gift from the heavens.
Also, anyone else remember when U2 was among the first to jump into the iTunes bandwagon in 2004? IIRC, "big" performers avoided it like the plague before that.

I thought that it's been cool to "hate" U2 (or at least Bono) for years already? Even though they're not exactly my biggest favourites either, I can't understand why so many people (claim to) hate them so much. I do find them to be a bit uninspiring and bland, and just too
average in many ways, but they've got a few pretty cool and catchy tunes as well that I like. I'm pretty sure that most people don't hate the music itself, they may hate the fact that U2 have become "corporate sellouts" or they may hate Bono's political views or his need to be in the limelight all the time - they hate the whole phenomenon of U2 ((
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq4uQCp71G0) but what's that got to do with anything?) but not the music.
