In the classical sense, maybe not. But he's innovative as hell, and he's come up with a lot of sounds and riffs that have been copied continually over the years. Check out the movie
It Might Get Loud sometime, you'll see him in a whole new light.
Also - there's a lot of so-called great guitarists out there that make some pretty boring music. It's not all just about technical skill.

Point taken Brethren, but don't forget it was Brian Eno who pushed them towards a more interesting sound. It's an influence anyway. I'm all for education so I'll see if I can find It Might Get Loud. At least he always sounds like himself and not a copy of someone else.
Joe Satriani's music mostly bores the hell out of me (sorry Piglick) so I know what you mean. However tastes are varied and I can see why U2 is successful even though it does nothing for me. Generally my guitar yardstick is Allan Holdsworth for virtuosity and musicality - I'm not keen on show-off guitar noises.
