I think they're all a bunch of puffed-up egos who frequently miss the point of what they're doing. The method in which they miss the point just tends to vary depending on which side of the Atlantic they're on.

It always seems to me that the big site game reviewers give out the exclusive big scores the the AAA hot shit titles, then turn on the smaller, lesser known games to make it look like they're tough journalists. They also seem to focus more on the technical details rather than the experience as a whole. I hate seeing an otherwise awesome game get docked a few points because it didn't have multiplayer or as many sets of armor as Game X. That's like movie reviewers knocking a star off Citizen Kane because it didn't have a building collapse and a car chase. It's stupid.
Hell, the whole thing is pretty well dumb sometimes.

I really miss PC Accelerator, so I suppose I'm the wrong guy to comment.

I really don't bother much with American publications any more, aside from using them as a source of trailers, interviews, game convention coverage, etc. The likes of IGN and Gamespot often don't even bother to put an effort into differentiating the reviews of multi-platform titles, they usually just copy and paste the entire thing three times. There's rarely any comments on PC game performance, how different a PC game is from the console versions, etc.
UK's Edge is really over-hyped, everyone harps on about how they're really professional and harshly scrutinise games in reviews. But when they give the likes of Halo 3 10/10 and Gears of War 2 9/10, you start to lose credibility, IMO.
UK journalism tend to have far more entertaining writing, filled with sharp humour. It's one of the reasons why I still read Rock, Paper, Shotgun. I used to read PC Zone back in the 90's, that was always a highly entertaining read.

Apparently the pilot of Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe is airing on Tuesday at 10pm. :D
No doubt there'll be youtube links for people outside the UK.

Consolevania was a lot of fun to watch. It did have in-depth, serious reviews in-between all of the Jackass-esque sketches.

So that annoying tendency to try and squeeze in a joke, no matter how lame, into every sentence is what passes as entertainment writing, and making puns based on game titles as sharp humour?

Could have stopped there- last couple of reviews I've read from IGN/GS were so generic and formulaic I wouldn't have been able to tell which games they were for if not for the screenshots. Well OK, the review titles gave it away too.

Back in the day I used to buy the PC Format
PC Format used to be aces.
Also, once they had a coverdisc which accidently contained the chat logs /e-mail correspondance between one of their staff writers and his Mistress hidden away in one of the sub-directroies.
This was also aces, although it was never mentioned in the following month's issue. This was before widespread internets, so I never got to gleefully point this out at the time.
