I never really liked PC Format. I felt they glossed over important aspects of games and it sometimes skewed the review in the total wrong direction (though mostly it was ok). PC Gamer used to be so on the money for my taste but I felt it went downhill after Deus Ex 2 came out. It's still pretty good though, just not as on it as it used to be.
I quite like Edge although sometimes I just think wtf.
lols on the cover disc story. Wtf was he thinking (not being more careful)?

He is a amusing but I can imagine why people would mostly disagree with him - he's very particular. His reviews of some games are spot on though. I haven't played most of them though.

A good game does not equal fun...
 It damn well better. :p

Just like a good film or book doesn't have to be fun.

That was probably more of a reaction to your generalisation of the issue. A blanket statement like 'a good game does not equal fun' makes the fallacy of excluding 'fun' games from being 'good' simply by virtue of them not possessing any emotionally moving or intellectually deep qualities.
I'm sure lotsa people here already got what you're essentially trying to say. Like some of the more intriguing concepts in the (

I don't think that analogy works. Some books and films are created to be fun, but it's not central to those media. Whereas game designers - at least the ones I know - really do sit down and try to figure out exactly how to make their games
fun as a fundamental premise to making their games
good.

As long as non-games like The Path don't interfere with the release of AAA blockbusters, then I have no complaints. I like my Silent Hill 2's, Stalker's and Ico's just as much as I like my popcorn genre games where men are shot and things go boom. The market is big enough to support both.
On a related note, Kieron Gillen has retired from full time game journalism. Proof that there is a God.

he certainly was a better journalist (or just picked better games, themes) than other journalists. his problem was he was not good enough and pretty self-assured leading to blindness and arrogance disguised as "strong, factbased opinion". I think he was more popular among his reporter friends and magazine readers than ACTUAL GAMERS.

Let's face it, though: many gamers are self-involved, self-important gits who think that the moment has an opinion differing from theirs those people are assholes who should shut the fuck up.
Personally, while I disagree with some of KG's writings, I've usually got a lot out of them. His article on the Cradle was very good IMO. He rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but then this is the internet where people tend to think that their opinions are the honest-to-god Truth(tm), so if they dislike something it
must be unadulterated crap.
