I don't think there's a 3D game engine out now that couldn't do realistic shadows, but as far as Oblivion goes - the game blows, IMO. However, the mod community for Morrowind is strong and there was a mod that added a Thief blackjack to that game that could KO enemies. I'm sure similar mods will pop up for Oblivion.

I thought we already had a light gem of sorts.......the dynamic reticule

Looks too TDS'ish for my liking...and I thought that player/ AI's didn't cast shadows in the game...so that's kind of a step backwards.

You can turn on player/ai shadows, but all the environment doesn't cast shadows and there's no way to turn them on, so Oblivion would be a very BAD choice for a Thief mod IMO

i've got to agree with above
there's no proper lighting rendering and visibility is sometimes guessplay with no visible light sources and no dynamic lights so you can't even douse them
game itself is impressive in it's depth, but deeply flawed
the fleet of mods do fix much of the worries though
but players shouldn't have to do the works of game developers
the engine is perfect for what the game is, and the stealth elements implemented in it
but it would be a disastrous choice for a thief game engine
doom3 is still my choice

no dynamic lights
errr the torch I am holding in the screenshot is a dynamic light..
And cmon half of deadly shadows you can't tell whether you are in light or dark only by the light gem...The original thiefs on the Dark engine are even worse...There were times I could have sworn I was in a shadow and the light gem said otherwise and vice versa..
I have not played Doom 3 so can reserve no judgement on it yet...

There are faster, more flexible, more stable, and more proven game engines out there. Bethesda's shit is always, without fail, bug-ridden. Morrowind was slow as turtle-shit and the only thing that made it worth playing were the mods that patched it's glaring defects. Then you had conflicts between mods to work out because their modding system was fruity. Ugh! Bethesda can bite me.

Go to the elderscrolls forum and read the complaints of people who have 2+ ghz processors who get 5 FPS in the game. The minimum system requirements for that game are a 500 mhz cpu and the recommended are 800 mhz cpu. So, there is no reason why people with 2 ghz processors in their system should be suffering from lousy FPS, stuttering, and the all too often CTD. We're not talking about a shitty rig, but a shitty product in Morrowind.
