Hey folks. Forgive me if this has already been brought up, but I did a search and found nothing, so I figured I'm okay.
Does Oblivion have anything like an "Unarmored" skill? In other words is there any benefit to wearing any of the non-armor clothes in the game (including robes), other than being purely aesthetic? I guess if they're enchanted they could be useful, but unless you've got some serious damage reflection, the lack of armor doesn't really seem to be worth it.

The power percentage of your spells drop if you wear armor. As for unarmored, there are aparently refrences of it in the files but they don't actually do anything enabled. There are some mods that add a shield spell to you based on your hand to hand and I think athletics, which makes sence since unarmored isn't about how much less damage you take because of the toughness of what your wearing but how well you move with the punches to soften the blow, so to speak. :)

I think your clothes also influences some quests - I can only think of 2 off the top of my head:
Sanguine's Shrine quest, where you have to get into Caro's dinner party. You have to wear nice clothes for the guard to let you in.
"Whodunit" Dark Brotherhood quest, where you're locked in a mansion with five others. Supposedly, they'll be more suspicious if you arrive in some black assassin garb. (Your DB friends emphasis the importance of appearance in deceiving them)
You could always enchant all of your clothes with Shield effects. Armor without the weight.

Yeah, even if you enchant all possible pieces (pants/Shirt/shoes/2 rings/amulet/hood) just with grand soul shield enchants you reach 70, and thats just 15 short of max, pretty much weightless and doesnt need repair. If you get the best sigil stones with Shield 20 you could max out and even have some free space for other enchants.
However dont ask me for tips on how to get along without armor until you reach the point where you can get all that stuff :cheeky:

Use the Elemental Shield Sigil Stones instead, they provide 25 (element) Shield for the Transcendent version. The magnitude should probably have been reversed to 25 Shield and 20 Elemental Shield.

someone care to elaborate on this for me? My mage wears heavy armor, and i'd like to know how much it is affecting me. If its not that large of a decrease, I would suggest armor over clothing any day. Yes, you can enchant clothing to be as strong as any armor, however armor will give you the defense you want, leaving room for you to enchant it with other cool features. and if you take the time to master it, armor you wear becomes weightless anyway. The only benefit of clothes would then be that they are unbreakable. But i'm talking about the long run, so if your only going to a certain level, this may not matter so much.

Well in one of the spell windows (or all, I can't remember off hand) It'll tell you your spell percentage. Thats how much your spells heal/boost/damage/ect. I don't think it effects the time the spell lasts though. Anywho, I don't know how much of a percentage drop you get with light and heavy, but I figure the quickest way to find out is to remove all armor (get 100 percent spell power) then start putting on your armor and checking the percentage drop after each peice. I think the skill level your armor is at also makes your percentage go back up, maybe even back to 100 at full, but who knows.
I do know that my pure mage doesn't have any trouble with armor because she uses a heal 3 for 60 sec and 50 shield for 60 sec as her healing spell and 'Not in the face!' which is a 50 shield spell for 60 sec. Fairly cheap spells which make her quite durable. Also conjuration is a great way to pound on enemys while they attack your summon (summons if you use a conjuration unnerf mod). Before that she just threw summons at her enemys and hid. :D Things get much easier when you get to make your own spells. As for enchanting armor, unless you just use sigil stones I don't find the enchants very worth it for armor. A simple + to your skills will eventually become useless because skills don't scale past 100, and very few stats give much of a bonus past 100 either. But to each their own. :)

The more armor you're wearing, the lower your "spell effectiveness" will be, reducing spell magnitudes and durations. HOWEVER, as you increase your Light/Heavy armor skills the penalty gets reduced, so when you reach Master level there's no penalty at all.
I believe that the total armor weight is also involved, but can't confirm it. My current character wears heavy armor, and right now his spell effectiveness is at 98%.

Yeah, that was sure an eye opener. Fire Shield, Frost Shield, etc., all provide the same armor boost as plain vanilla Shield. And ALL Shield does is boost your armor rating. Shield is for chumps, and I've been a big one. Also learned only recently that the max armor rating is 85 no matter what. I've been wasting a lot of spells, potions and amulets on that one too.
