For those who have played armourless characters... What kind of total armor values can one expect with a character that specialises in Unarmored, towards the higher end of the skill scale (say around 80 points of skill)? Is it better/worse than equivalent skill in light armor and wearing a full glass armor suit?

Much, much worse. It's roughly comparable to chitin. To find out for yourself start a new game, bring down the console (hit ~) and type "player -> setunarmored 70" (without quotes). Substitute whatever number for 70 to see different values.
There are a couple of plugins out there that add a Sanctuary effect while unarmored. You might like to try them out for balance.

Tsk, tsk... Hmmm. Well, the armour is paid for by its weight, so there needs to be benefits, I suppose. Well, back to redesigning my unarmed-unarmored monk.. ;)
(sanctuary does sound good, I wonder how much perma-effect sanctuary items will cost...)

There is a dodge mod plugin that adds a sanctuary bonus based on your unarmored skill (the sanct bonus goes down if you wear armor).

Just a quick note: Unarmoured doesn't appear to work correctly unless you have one or more pieces of armour equipped. This means that if you have an unarmoured character, you should equip armour boots or something. I don't think the bug has been fixed and I don't think that it will be.

About 5000 per point (an exquisite ring gives sanctuary: 24 points and costs a bit over 120,000gp to enchant (plus soul)).
If you're going to be using Unarmed, you should download Fists of Fire, Otherwise it really really sucks. My first monk-like spent over a minute trying to beat of a scrib and failing to do any damage, before I restarted with a blade user.

Most mods tend to encourage munchkinism and overkill, so I've avoided mods that actually affect gameplay and balance... And I've killed a scrib with unarmed, it just takes time. ;) (although this was partially because my character had only 30 strength) The only thing I might mod is some kind of unarmed damage bonus for argonians and khajiit because of their claws...
Striker: Thanks, I'll check if that works, I have a character with relatively high light armor and unarmored, should be easy to see whether wearing one piece of armour has a noticeable effect...

Oh no no.
Chose to play as a imperial, chose "The warrior" as sign, and go Hand-to-hand. When you have lvl.100 HTH, your nearly invincible. (Except if your being attacked by 4 or more NPCs!) :)
