Under what conditions you will not buy or even not play Thief 4 at all? - by Lady Rowena

So if they screw up the blackjack mechanic - my one and only true defense against the hordes of guards and factions of human enemies - I'll stick to thief 2.
Agreed. Another thing that I found frustrating (in what's become a long list) in TDS. I remember actually gritting my teeth in frustration when I'd sneak up on someone and I'd be standing sooooo close that if it had been RL they could have felt my breath on their neck; then I'd raise the blackjack and whooosh!! I'd miss entirely and half the time end up alerting the AI to my presence.
Without my trusted blackjack from T1 & T2 I am nothing. :(
I also agree with you SJ, as well as Yandros & Lady R re: 3rd person. Forget that! Like I said, if I want to play in the 3rd person I'll just go crank up Tomb Raider (or Abe's Oddworld). :p

I'll also add in that what has been said about "modern" thief is true for me as well.
Most of thief's charm comes from its setting - there are plenty of modern FPS style games out there - let this one continue to stand out in its genre.
Also, "modern" cannot work for
Thief. How is "modern" a natural progression from stylistic and technologic anachronism? Even the Lost City had snazzy, futuristic lighting schemes.

I won't buy it if it won't run on my computer. If I have a console when it comes out (unlikely, but possible I guess) I'd consider playing it on that.
I'd accept a complete franchise reboot if the resulting game is really good.

So what the reason to wait two-three years for Thief 4 to create your own missions even without a confidence that the game's editor will ever be released? There is another basement exists, and it's name is...TDM ;). Don't waste your time and begin right now.
Oh believe me, I have my copy of Doom 3 all patched and ready to go  I'm just saying, Thief has survived as long as it has due to the Fan Missions, and so providing a Thief game without an editor would be a big no-no for me.

And upon playing Thief: DS again for the first time in a LONG time (years) I had forgotten how horribly broken the blackjack mechanic is when compared to the satisfying 'thud' and slow body drop version of 1 and 2 - hell, half the time the blackjack didnt even hit when I swung it at close range. I shouldnt be failing my damn arms wildly trying to blackjack someone when a decade old game got it right every single time. DS was just so damn clunky that its ridiculous.
Yup, this was the thing that broke the immersion for me. I guess it's different for different people, but I felt that if they couldn't get the blackjacking sorted in a Thief game, then something really was wrong with the game. Shame really, I thought the rest of it was OK.

I think that no matter how the game will look like in the end, I'll buy it simply out of curiosity. Traditional or modern-style, no matter.

Well, let's hope that Eidos will release the game SDK for Thief 4 (and for Deus Ex 3 too).
P.S. I wonder why Eidos hasn't made this for Tomb Raider: Underworld:confused:... It is pretty obvious to all that it would be an additional stimulus to buy the game. So why not? I don't understand.

They're happy designing new clothes and suits for Lara Croft and I don't even want to mention the Tomb Raider fanfictions I've read...

That's pitifully :(. The formula "game + SDK" is a standard de facto since Duke Nukem 3D in 1996.
As for me, I will buy Thief 4 only if it will be Thief 1&2-like.

First, it has to run on my laptop. Second, it has to be a faithful continuation of Thief II gameplay.

If there are surveillance cameras I'm out.
