Under what conditions you will not buy or even not play Thief 4 at all? - by Lady Rowena

I probably won't buy TH14F, if I never get a PC that runs it.
TTK12G3 on 11/6/2009 at 23:54
If others say that's it's REALLY lame, then I won't get. I got TDS soon after its release, but I just don't trust that games are really worth that kind of shot unless there is a lot of promise behind a game's release. So far, I have not seen any concepts, art or even names of those who will be working on the project.
Also, if Thaif has some really stupid DRM scheme, then it's a no-go. I can begrudgingly accept Steam, but I will not accept adware, install limits, or anything that I can't remove from my system without tearing it from the Windows folder.

I win never EVER run a game with STEAM on it! I don't care WHAT the game is or how good it is!
I first bought Left 4 dead, because I had read good things about the game. But STEAM completely ruined it for me! It took over 2 HOURS on a high speed line (10 Mbps line) for it to put all the CRAP that it took to run STEAM.
THEN, I found out that on that stupid game you COULD NOT SAVE WHEN YOU WANTED TO....I do not know if that was the idiotic game developers idea that put that limitation in, but I ended up getting so mad I threw the game away and will never purchase another STEAM based game again.
If thief 4 has STEAM or DRM that limits how many times you can install they can keep it! STEAM is a steaming pile of CRAP as far as I am concerned.
Otherwise I will be willing to try Thief 4, if it gets good reviews. But after Thief DS, I will not pre order one again.
Let's all hope that Eidos gets it right this time!

Valve tends to update a lot of stuff at once, but this tends to happen once a year or when you buy an old copy that needs to be updated. A little annoying, but manageable. This isn't really a problem. Since Thaif isn't going to be developed by Valve, I can't imagine this problem cropping up.

Dude, it's a multiplayer game. I'm sorry if you don't have an hour or so to complete a campaign, but that's how it works. The single player isn't as fun without real people anyway.

Say, are you the one who keeps writing that last sentence on every Amazon review of a Steam game?;)

Here, I totally agree with you!:thumb:
If you don't agree with me on the other points, that's fine. I don't like Steam myself, but for different reasons. Anyway, back to the thread.

I won't buy it if it requires an Internet connection to play/activate/whatever. I have no net at home (out of choice; I also lack a TV, a radio and a microwave) and don't intend to get it just for a game, even Thief.
There are a lot of design features that are red flags - generally, the more they stray from the basic T1-T2 formula and try for a misguided moron-friendly appeal, the more likely I will just sigh and avoid it. Give us a clean simulation experience and I will be happy.
Storywise, go ahead and experiment. I will even buy it if it is Thief Modern, or if (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57663) our worst fears are confirmed. :sly:
On the other hand, since I have low expectations, I might be pleasantly surprised after all. Maybe they will just get it right.

No, I agree, Valve is stupid, period! And people accepting it, is the reason we have this garbage in the first place. There is no reason for it and I will simply not put myself through it again! If thief 4 does not have STEAM I will consider it, if it does I will not. Simple as that.
I bought left 4 dead to play offline, not online and I don't need that absolute idiotic DRM garbage on my computer system. The day a game takes two hours to load crap on my computer, is the day it is going the garbage! And that is that! It is not "annoying" it is insulting! Both to me as a buyer and as a game player.
I am sick and tired of these game companies treating paying customers like potential thieves and putting on so much DRM crap onto your computer it is not funny. If you want to accept it, fine by me. But I will NOT buy a game that has that kind of DRM ever again!

DUDE, it also has single player on it! And in case you didn't know..... It is a game you can be killed real easy in! So don't look down on me like I don't know what I am talking about. They could have very easily put in a save function for single player IF THEY WANTED TO! And why should you buy a game that you cannot save and complete later? That is even more stupid than the DRM they put in it.
I have been gaming for years and never have been subjected to this kind of idiotic DRM as now. And that is your opinion on how fun the game is. I like single player games.
Again, if you want to play it, fine. But don't act like I should be subjected to the kind of idiotic nonsense of STEAM and say I should just accept it. Because I will not. It is the very principle of me being treated like a criminal, when I paid good money for that game that chaffs my hide.
They can go screw themselves for all I care. And any other developers that use STEAM for a DRM scheme.

I don't even BUY my games from Amazon. But you seem to be someone who is ready to jump to conclusions. Thanks for making my point on how crappy STEAM really is, because I apparently don't seem to be the only one who is unhappy with STEAM.
People hate STEAM for different reasons, but the hatred is still the same. I am just not one who likes putting up with crap like that, so I don't.
thisisnonsense on 14/6/2009 at 13:57
I will buy it if it gets reasonable reviews on here and has no online activation of any sort, and doesn't refuse to install if Nero is installed etc. I won't buy it even if the universal opinion is that it is the-best-Thief-game-ever-by-miles, but it has activation or other too twitchy DRM.
Bioshock once, shame on you. Bioshock twice, shame on me.

I agree with all what webe 123 said. I just couldn't wait Half Life 2 to be released. I was willing to buy it the same day it was released, but I didn't because the fricking Steam activation/autentication system.
I had finally the opportunity to play it "somehow" a few months ago, but Steam or any other similar company will never see my money, even if the game is named Thief.
As a side note, I have installed/unistalled hundred of times Thief 1 and 2 on my computer. I have three copies of T2 installed at the moment, for editing purposes, etc. How it would be possible if there was limited number of installations?

There were so many things wrong with my initial Deadly Shadow experiences, that I now regard the game as a mere soundtrack. However, the (very first) thing that *broke* my game is the point I will start with then.
I wanted to run free and jump and climb and explore! I did manage to get up on some beams at one point. Unfortunately, when I moved my mouselook to the left and tried running across the beam, my body could not seem to keep up and I fell off the damn thing! Oh my Lord was I pissed. I understand that this has something to do with the addition of 3rd person view? Don't do that again please...
If this new game feels like you are a mouse in a box... no good.
If this new game feels like you are in a spacious, craftily planned environment... score.
Please remember that the core of the first Thief experience was based largely on the musings and craft of the first wave of crpgs. LGS themselves contributed mightily to the cause with Underworld. The only way this new team will "get it" is to go back through the history of LGS and find out what the hell they were up to! There is a freakin' goldmine back there boys. ;)
In short, cater to the earliest fans first, and you may possibly have another classic on your hands that stands the test of time. Make another Deadly, and kiss your careers (and possibly much worse) goodbye. :ebil:
