does that account for the pagan down in the area on the way to the ritual of the root?

Is there a Wisp that comes through there? The deadly Wisps and the Pagans getting killed by them seem like continuity errors, and the AI deaths by Wisps don't seem to have been addressed by the devs. The Pagans don't seem to know what's hitting them and they don't avoid the Wisps and forget they were just injured until the final fatal burn.

actually if remember right he wasn't dead because originally i tried using him for the blood part of the ritual and it never worked. however i always found him in water so it might of been that he was cleansed of blood.

You need to have blood spilled onto the altar, not a wounded body. You have to stab or shoot a body near or on the bloodmark and cause blood to splash on it. The patrolling treebeast can suffice, as well, and whatever is wounded doesn't have to die, and the body itself doesn't need to be on the altar. Just blood for that part. The AIs, dead or injured, don't have blood stains on them, nor do they have blood flowing from wounds. Even an AI with skin made to look wounded or gory won't count. For players who don't like to murder in the game, these suicidal Pagans make it possible to complete the mission without murdering, even if bleeding a corpse is still too morbid for some.

Actually I never had to kill anyone or cause injury there. I get the body by the stairs down to the claw and drop it on the altar and it works everytime. I never had to shoot it or anything.:angel::thumb:

Will an unwounded body work?

No. I tried knocking out the shaman who's guarding the paw and dumping her on the altar but nothing happened. They have to be dead.
I didn't try a drowned body though....

Now that I think of it, I do remember finding that Pagan dead near the fire too once a long time ago...

That one's definitely killed by a Wisp. I watched her stand there and let the Wisp push into her head as she spasmed from injury, and it went on its way and came back, and she stood there and it happened again from the other side, and she died.
