Recently had my thief II disc shatter in my CD drive. No more thief for a while. The tech who fixed the drive said he had never seen a CD shatter like that!:eek:

Arg, painful. Good luck finding a new copy. :(

And whatevery you do, avoid the downloadable versions from EBGames. They don't work with fan-made patches like DDFix, and it's very likely that some, most, or all FMs won't work either.

That's way we shouldn't look so bad at NO-CD patch-es.

Yes, we should look down on illegal uses of it. That's why we question those asking for one, and keep such talk behind-the-scenes.

damn, i remeber when you could get any thief game brand new off amazon and the like and for a good price too . . . . damn I still remeber best buy selling like fifty copies of thief gold for like 15 bucks . . . that was a long time ago . . . i have had to put down my thief 2 playing for a different but similar reason. I can't get that damn DDFIXGUI to work right (bcause of DDRAW.DLL) and then it tells me to get a prepatched .exe so I do and then it either crashes thief or asks me to insert the game cd EVEN THOUGH I HAVE THE GAME CD IN THE COMPUTER!
anyway it is alwasy delightful to speak to you guys on the forum, take care

It's more common than you think. I believe it has to do with the heat of the drive/laser accelerating the aging of the polymer, making it brittle. The culprit is usually the speed of the drive going over 48x. Only buy slower drives, and avoid the 52x ones. And of course, make a backup of your originals for
yourself.

Yes, I've heard stories of it happening, but it was the first time I expereinced it directly. Fortunately, the drive itself was fine, just the CD was all in shards.
It started whirring and then there was a loud bang. I actually fished most of it out myself, and the tech got the last few shards out that were disrupting the CD drive door from properly opening and closing. I will probably buy another copy at some point, playing MTW again right now. Sorry Garret, couldn't get you out of a jam this time!

I didn't even know they had different speed drives. Oh well, guess I'm one step above the pagans:laff:.
