and it is actually the 4th if you consider ut2004 the 3rd. :joke:
If you've got the Collector's for UT3, you might've noticed that UT2003 is conveniently absent from their
History of UT feature on the bonus disc. Best thing they've done with that game altogether.

How is UT3 anyway? Is it a lot like 200X? I fucking hated what they did to it.
It's a lot more like UT1 in terms of style and pacing. One notable shortcoming is a relatively sparse selection of maps, though the ones in there are quite good, in my opinion (though, like Kalit, I'd also appreciate the return of a couple of dark, claustrophobic maps). Not quite there yet, but close enough - as far as I'm concerned, this is the first worthy sequel to the original UT. I found 2004 to be somewhere between
ok and
meh.

I was a diehard UT99 player and then was furious that with UT2003 Epic tried to conform the game to the "pure" Quake 3 style.
Ditto.

What? How was ut2k3 anything like q3?

UT2004 was vastly superior game to UT99, it always amazes me how much sentimental loyalty people have to a game that was good, but essentially a slower uglier Quake 3 with better bots. UT99 really is a glorified expansion pack for Unreal's multiplayer, which wasn't all the great to start out with. 2004 had more features, more levels, more game modes (although I'll admit that double domination isn't nearly as good as Domination), and even better AI. It also didn't look like garbage.
UT3 is the inverse of BioShock: a great game on the inside, flawed by a lack of polish and features on the outside. UT3 lacks many standard features of a multiplayer FPS, most of them due to the obvious consolization of the interface, which is terrible.
I still enjoy playing it though, I just wish that before making an expansion pack they had fixed the problems in the original. Hopefully there's still time to do both.

I think that since 2004 is to 2003 as UT99 is to Unreal (ie planned to be expansion packs but eventually became standalone games) it's fair that they treat 2003/4 as essentailly one game, for the same reason that they don't really include the original Unreal's multiplayer in "history of UT."

Apart from shitty music, washed out & weak sound effects, a big ass collection of graphics > gameplay maps and boring SP campaign; yes, UT2004 was pretty good.

Except for superficial things (ie bright colors), it wasn't, and I don't understand why people keep repeating that it was. UT99 is much closer to Quake 3's gameplay and design (rip-off might be to harsh a word...) than anything in UT2003/4.
UT3 does in some significant ways return to the 90's style of FPS: stronger gravity, slower running, more powerful weapons (although since this is unreal, they're still pitifully weak).
But in many other significant ways UT3 is still more modern - very little health, vehicles, wide-open maps, team play stressed, etc. UT3 tilts much more towards 2004 than 1999.

While I agree that the sound design in UT2004 wasn't good at all, neither were UT99's. In both games, it's too hard to distinguish what's going on. Epic apparently thinks "futuristic" = metallic and basically everything sounded like pocket change in both games. Compare to q3, which had extremely clear sound design - powerups, weapons, and everything else had sound effects that were extremely easy to differentiate (nobody would have trouble identifying a Quad Damage coming at them). Q3 also just plain sounded better - more bass, better sound propagation, etc.
UT99's level design is the most overrated in the history of level design. Virtually 90% of the non-modded (ie non-sniper) servers in UT are playing Quake 3 conversions or Facing Worlds. (If you don't believe me, log and check right now.) Know why? Because most of the stock maps that came with UT99 are just
not that good. If you picked a random Quake 3 map and put it against a random UT map 9/10 times the Q3 map would be clearly superior. UT2004 wasn't perfect, but I don't think you can say the same about it.

I never played UT2004... gave up after trying 2003.
I think it's downright ridiculous to call UT a glorified expansion pack for Unreal and I don't think anyone in the old Unreal/UT99 community would agree. And if you're suggested Quake 3 was the better game, I would strongly disagree.
With UT2003, the graphics/art was obviously Quake-ized, the movement largely characterizing Unreal was mitigated and it become more of an aiming game like Quake. It felt like Epic had given in to the ridicule of the Quake community and conformed the game. It was MASSIVELY different than UT99 and the first game that comes to mind for comparisons is obviously Q3...

Now that's a masterpiece...:laff: UT99 level design is precisely what UT3 (which you would seemingly favor) lacks. The stock maps were brilliant and even the single-player mode was fun. You can hardly bring up what maps are being played now in UT99, the game is OLD. Of course it's just Face and Deck. In its heydey virtually all the stock maps were played to the max.
I was trying to look up UT's original maps list to prove how whack your little statistic is when I found the wikipedia site where it lists
Place WCG 2001 WCG 2002
1st GitzZz GitzZz
2nd XS|Pain Shaggy
3rd Xan eVeNfLoW
That's probably where I would have gone with my clan (sYn) for the TDM competition. I played with XS
Pain quite a bit. I'm thinking destrukt could have beaten Gitzzz had he gone.

Koos galleon, Facing Worlds, Eternal Caves, Mazon, Ocean Floor, Sesmar, etc. etc.; there are so many memorable maps for me in UT99. I'd actually need to go into UT2004 to collect examples, but I could name these from the top of my head.
Come to think of it, I never actually tried custom content for UT99. I played that game back in the days when I had not learned of the wonders of the internet.
vurt on 29/11/2008 at 21:50
I bought UT3 but i got bored within 1-2 days, probably because it feelt like ut2004 with new gfx.. i mainly bought it because i had hopes that the mod community would be as creative as with UT2004 (probably the best money i've spent on a game ever) but so far the mod scene seems a bit dead.
Bjossi on 29/11/2008 at 21:55
And restricted. I've noticed in mod remakes that authors had to make sacrifices due to engine limitations. Take UT2004 RPG for an example, an UT3 equivalent exists but isn't nearly as flexible. (both for author's preference reasons as well as limitations)

Now you're making even less sense. The movement in ut2k3 is the most versatile of all the UT games. It was then dumbed down in 2k4 and again in UT3 bringing it closer to UT99 standards. 2k3 is the mother of all hitscan FPSs though, but I wouldn't call Q3 a hitscan game as it had a rocketlauncher that was actually useful.
