Hi All,
Been playing TG & T2 since..... well, for years on and off! Can't get into T3 tho'.
Dunno if this is common knowledge, but in the past I've read on the net about climbing up through a chimney in T2 Demo to get to the roof. Apparently, so the write ups say, the door frames up there were incomplete and in an 'alpha-ish state' going by what I read. Well, I got up there for the first time the other day, and it all looks quite complete and beta-ish to me, playing on a recently downloaded T2 Demo. Also found a couple more things on the 'way down' outside; a ladder on the west side and an open bricked up window on the north. The ladder and open bricked up window don't really do much, but it's a buzz to get to see areas which are normally 'out of bounds' - or maybe I'm just too weird? :thumb: If you wanna do the ladder and open bricked up window thing, you'll need loadsa health potions to drink and a speed potion to do a long jump.

Sounds cool. I never played the T2 Demo...got any screenshots?

And are ya sure it's the T2 Alpha Demo, not just the T2 Demo? That chimney's there in all versions, and if the demo's not installed properly, then many things will look incorrect.
Thief13x, the demo is of Life of the Party, but it's called "Unwelcome Guest", and has many significant differences, including its own briefing movie, it's less fleshed out--especially in Angelwatch--and there are changes to texts and the general story.

And a much better playthrough than the Life of the party. Especially the lead up to Angelwatch. But those guards are hyper sensitive, especially in the audibles. They can hear a gnat fart at 50 yards, and Garrett on moss arrows through a brick wall. :)

Okay on Life Of The Party in T2. There's much more to do within the multi floored Angelwatch in that mission, whereas in the T2 demo, more of the action takes place outside, including [if anyone doesn't know] not 1 but 2 routes towards, & 2 entrances to Angelwatch, plus of course, chimneys you can climb up/down - they're blocked off in LOTP, so no idea if the ladder and open bricked up window are there, as there's no way to get to the roof in LOTP. In LOTP it's possible to get down to the streets and run around, in T2 Demo you die if your tootsies touch the ground - or very soon after. Yes, there's an obvious similarity but they are quite different. Hey, wouldn't it be great if someone combined these two great missions into one enormous level? Both are probably my fave Thiefy levels, though at least the T2 downloadable demo plays with XP, can't get TG or T2 to load, might have to get an old banger of a PC with W95SE on it and play Thief on that.
Never took much notice of the intro 'movies', just got on and played the games. I think I must have originally had [in 2000] the Thief 2 demo along with other demos, on a CD from a magazine, but the T2 demo I have now was downloaded recently from planetfile or gamefile, erm, can't rememberwhatfile.com :cheeky: I was thinking that someone may have finished the roof off after what I read on Lytha's Thief site, about the walls & rooms underneath the roof etc not being all there or not finished off. Maybe he had the early magazine CD demo? Then again he would have climbed up from the main game playing area below, which was presumably displaying okay otherwise he would have mentioned it. I never did the T2 Demo roof thing on the magazine CD, hmmmm, something to try if I still have it handy!
I don't have any screen shots, but it's really not that difficult to get up to the roof [I thought it would take forever], with only 5 or 6 crates needed here and there, in order to get up to the next beam/girder in the chimney. The first girder/back of fireplace, needs 3 crates [stacked staircase style] or 2 if you're a good jumper, to get up to the next girder, then it's just 1 here and there when needed if you can't jump high enough. It's only 6 girders to the top, I would have attempted this years ago If I'd known that, I thought there'd be loads and loads, so if you've never done it for the same reason, now's the time. If you attack the guard at the top and quickly hop down on the top chimney girder so he's 'floating' in the air above you, you might have a suprise when you climb back down to the bottom of the chimney!
Some crates are nearby in the janitor's cupboard near the hallway fireplace, and in the kitchen storeroom, but you'll need some more from outside. When you stack crates, look straight ahead before pressing the 'r' key to release, then the crates drop on their bottoms, which make them more stackable as they have more 'flat area' as far as the computer is aware of, than the sides. If you look down and then release, the crates land on their sides, and have a much smaller 'flat area' to stack with - as far as Mr Computer is concerned anyway.
The chimney to go up is in the room where the nobleman is standing looking at the fire. Put the fire out and turn the brightness up as it's dark in the chimney [the + key does it here, & it's the - key to return to normal]. The display is a bit 'blotchy' like this, but it'll enable you to see. Of course I may now try to go up using flares to light my passage.....
Beyond this it is [apparently] possible to get up on top of the roof, and even go up into the giant blue water arrow shaped thingy on top, but loads of crates are needed for that, so maybe that's something I'll save for a rainy day.....
Hope this is of help, apologies if I'm telling you how to suck eggs.

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/556/angelwatch.jpgThere's not much up there (in comparison to the demo), although if you peer down over where the rest of the railing should have been there's another giant winged statue that you wouldn't normally be able to see.
I wanted to take a shot from next to the blue thingie but by the time I got up here I realized I didn't have a speed potion with me... bloody steep roof

Aha, so you can get up there in LOTP! Come on then, how's it done? Doesn't look as though the 4 central doors are there going by the screenshot - any guards or lower rooms?
jtr7 on 3/4/2009 at 23:03
I know it can be done with crate-stacking and elevatoring techniques, both engine bug exploits, but if you got up there without either, or without DromEd, we'd like to know how, please.:)

They must originally intend for these 'unusual areas' to be played, but I guess they run out of time to sort things fully, and have to get the game in a marketable state at some point for release, leaving the game smaller as a result ie the ladder and open bricked up window mentioned earlier. That said, in the map in T2 Demo, it does actually have written; 'roof', so although it's somewhat tricky to find out about unless you read these kinda forums, I suppose it is part of the game.
Hey, I just had a thought, I was playing on normal level, I wonder if the ladder and bricked up window are 'enabled' in hard or expert mode? Other areas are enabled in 'Bonehoard' when playing on expert.....

I don't even want to guess how many crates it would take, but it's surprizing how far just three flares will get you :sly: (I elevatored up from the base of the winged statue near the entrance).

Nope, its a very bland place. Not sure about the Dromed aspect of it but maybe they didn't have enough of their brushlimit left to implement the roof ?
