Cool, though I agree with Nightfall. To me it seems as though the artists at Blizzard weren't all that deep on making the game look all that mystical looking, and in the end it's a cross between the D&D movie and an episode of (

I was recently poking around Ashen Age 1 in Dromed, just to go on a "walking tour" without those pesky guards to bother me. Amazing stuff, not to mention the best FM lighting ever. Going through it with Light_Bright switched on really emphasizes how important it is. Do those wedge-combo arches incur less processing overhead? Or is processing sacrificed to get a better result?

It's not really to do with processing. DromEd only allows a max of 10-sided cylinders, which tend to look quite clunky to a modern audience. While the wedge arches would incur more processing, it's pretty negligible. It's just for aesthetics.
