I love you guys and how you've all been so belligerent lately.
Anyway, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing how 2014 unfolds, but I am not holding my breath for Thi4f. Logically, I think there is a good chance it is going to be pretty bad. However, something tells me that there might be some redeeming quality to it.
My impression of the gameplay videos was terrible. Trying to make Garret a "tacticool"(to borrow from earlier) hero misses the point entirely. Of course we also had throw out the entire mystique of the original universe in favor of a generic Robin Hood plot with a generic moustache twirling baron as the main villain.
It's like they decided to adapt Thief into a Michael Bay film.

The Medieval Adventures of Adam Jenson. Not thrilled, I must say.

Do we know that the baron is a generic villain?
We don't know anything about him.
And are we saying Truart wasn't a tiny bit generic corrupt lawman?
We should wait and see.

If the companion app description and art is anything to go by, then yes, he is a generic villain.

While that was my impression on hearing the initial description, actual encounters with the character showed him to be a lot more unique. He wasn't just generic evil. He was superstitious, paranoid, and lecherous....traits that led me to believe the character was inspired by some historical figures.

So couldn't the Baron be the same?

WHile I admit it's possible, what else I've seen of the game gives me little reason to believe the developer team is capable of creating a villian as interesting as the ones in the original games.

Yeah, I agree. I just don't like to jump to conclusions. He'll probably be pretty boring.

The Baron's positioning alone runs against the original feel of the city. Part of what made the city's political environment seem so Byzantine is that you could never quite figure exactly who was running things. There were vague references to a Baron but he was also not present in the city and not involved in it's day to day affairs. Having a central big bad who controls everything is the opposite of the competing lords and factions that set the tone of the existing games.
