Hi LarryG, Many thanks for replying. :thumb: I started from the beginning - as in, a brand new download of the FM (v. 2.0) - there were no previous saved games (deleted long ago, along with the original version of the FM), so started with a fresh download of the game.
(And, on discovering there were no notes being saved, I then uninstalled/deleted everything i.e. the FM, saved games and Thief 2 - and re-installed Thief, Tafferpatched and then downloaded the FM from scratch - still no notes!)

I don't have an explanation for that. The notes are handled by a utility in NVScripts, but you must have it present and installed correctly otherwise you would not be able to start the mission at all. The event that triggers the scratching sound is the same one that triggers the notes getting written. So I don't know what to say. I'll look into it and see what I can see. Meanwhile, take your own notes?

Thanks. (FYI: I also installed the German version, just to see, and that does the same for me - scribble sound, but no notes.) Yeah, started taking notes, even photographing stuff, but would rather use this as last resort, should all else fail, as was finding it rather slow going...!
Many thanks, I really appreciate it
(If you can't see anything, and it may be some weird glitch on my PC, is there a way I can open/read the journal's notes from the FM's files, so I can just print it all out?)

This may somehow be related to NewDark. You may be better off using the 1.18 version of Thief.
Getting at the notes from the files isn't easy. They are in ... \intrface\MISS22\English as pcx files, organized by the map page that they appear on and the location on that page. For example p021r002.PCX will appear on page 21 at location 02 when enabled.
Edit: This is definitely NewDark related. The mission is fine with 1.18. But it does not seem to write anything to map pages beyond the 7th page (from 0). This effectively breaks my note taking scheme. So, this mission has to be played on 1.18 until I figure out a new method for taking notes under NewDark.

Hi LarryG - many thanks for looking into this and for the notes on where to find the notes! (I'll give it a crack at least!) Hope you find a way in NewDark, as the auto note taking is a rather splendid feature of this rather splendid FM. In the meantime, I shall tinker with 1.18.
Thanks again :thumb:

I've spent I think or it seems, 5 hours trying to figure this out. There must be a safe in the attic. I think you go there at a certain time? It seems I can't put all the pieces together. Time keeps changing every time I look at the clocks. Archer, sailors...is that a certain time. 8:00 or 9:00? Please help me put this together so I can continue on. I'm truly stuck. When I check out the forum, I still can't figure it out. I need a horrific spoiler I'm afraid. I also found numbers in this forum 85764 . I'm thinking I need them to get into the safe.

Sooner or later, you have to go to the safe in the attic, but not at a specific time.
Since there was an earlier request from the author
not to give outright spoilers, I have removed my post again. See ffox' link to get closer to a spoiler.

I know, I know. Eventually if I keep trying, I find it.
Thanks everyone for your help.
There is just one more question. Where do I find a baby rattle?

Hint: You can find one where there are possibly babies buried (or maybe "buried" isn't exactly the right word). You'll likely have to do some climbing and searching well.
