The author set the ambient light to 3, so it's pretty dark. It looks fine on my monitor with default gamma, however. If you have the editor installed, I can explain how to increase the ambient light, if you want.
Does your monitor have different settings? (Game, Cinema, Sports, et al)

No terry it doesn't, but that idea prompted me to check my laptop screen brightness fn7 ....turned up to max it helps enough
thanks

When in trouble, wouldn't it be easier if we change brightness directly in cam.cfg.
gamma 1.1 ;darker
gamma 0.9 ;brighter
I'm asking

I have been playing Thief for nearly a decade and have heard of some of the things available in cam_ext such as anti-aliasing and bloom but have never understood any of them less alone altered any of them as I do not touch files I do not understand.....but I did look earlier for gamma in there as I had the thought that maybe I could change it a bit as an experiment
Didn't even think to look in cam.cfg. :laff:
it's stunning how much you learn when you do a little exercise such as updating Fan Missions FAQs, I have discovered/learnt something about every single section within that thread
Out of interest how do you know the specifics of what the gamma figure ie 1.1 darker 0.9 darker....if if wanted to learn more about all the different options in cam.ext and cam.cfg where would I find that info
Another thought...how come there is not a thread within TTLG that less computer savvy people could refer to as it is quite common to see post in the forum and replies that advise people to alter this or change that.....maybe another project for me :D
Anyway thanks for the info....but got the mission look ok now so will leave those files alone for the time being

Well, yes, if you manually change gamma settings in cam.cfg at least that value is kept until you type in a new one.
Now after buying a new monitor I've been playing Thief1 with gamma 1.1 and Thief2 with gamma 1.075

there is no reason to modify that manually, there is a perfectly working gamma slider in the video options.

That is great news, neither nickie or I realised that
Yes I did. :) Perhaps we've been talking at cross-purposes.
I'm sorry that other commitments recently have meant that I haven't kept up to date with this thread. I'll try and give it more attention from now on.
