If you want play T1/T2 and Thief DS, then don't buy a newer GeForce card. I have a 6600GT and the sky and other transparent things looks... awful..
Just an advice... ;)

depends.I have seen a guy that has played t3 on a p3 800/geforce3 and it was good enough for him (but for me,lets just say I would rather put a bullet in my head).I would go for a new pc,but thats me,not you.the choice is yours..and choice is always a problem ;)
a new mainstream pc will cost you up to 500$ (monitor not included),you shouldnt really go any lower than that if you dont want to end up with a piece of scrap again..so I would say,if you have 500$ to spare,go for a new pc..

Get a new machine and buy yourself the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Cheap as chips. For TDS you should really have at least 512MB of RAM so buy as much as you can for your dollar.

One way or another, you almost always get gipped when you get a pre-built machine. My suggestion is, if you've got a CompUSA nearby, go there and find out if theyre having a sale on Mobo+CPU bundles, if so, then you can grab one there, theyre usually pretty cheap and pretty good. (my AMD Athalon64 2.5GHz was part of a bundle, cheap as crap, too) I always go with Nvidia (mostly cuz they bought out Voodoo, which i loved), I've never had a bad experience with one to date, which is more than I can say for some of the ATIs ive had in the past (one or two fried on me within 2 months). If you dont have a nearby CompUSA, try (
http://www.newegg.com) NewEgg, you can usually find cheap good hardware there (my friend bought almost an entire new computer there about a year ago, and hasnt had a problem YET).
Hope that helps, my fellow taffer! May the Builder guide the toward the path of technological supremacy! :thumb:

Thanks to all the taffers for good suggestions.
Quick additional question: I'm looking at a new comp setup, which seems to have what I need at a price I can live with... it's got the nVIDIA GeForce 6100. will that play T: DS? If so, can I look forward to any problems?

Depending on situations, i've kinda hacked T1 into working on my GF 7900GS by breaking the game's cam.cfg.
the better your card the better T3 will play. Your choice. NV's drivers are kinda flaky at best when it comes to supporting old games, even though i personally swear by nvidia, i still have an FX5300LE in my lowend box specifically designed for older games (using the forceware 33.71 drivers that Shock2 requires, though i'm going to try later to break shock2 into working also)

it will launch the game, but it will be slow (probably painfully slow).as I said,if you want to play thief3 decently,gf6600 128MB 128bit should me considered as minimum.the price difference should be very small anyway..

I agree here . . . it's a shame too, 3DFX was a superb company, especially with their 'crusade' for OpenGL; I think it kind of funny that this old VooDoo3 I've got laying around is still on-par with current low-end cards.
Anyways, I've never ran into any problems with ATi, and I don't personally know anyone who has either. All around, their cards are good, but entirelly driver dependent; the only work around is to stay current on the newest drivers (which one should do anyways :D ).
Some of their cards are known for having problems displaying fog and other atmospheric effects, but this seems to be more dependent on certain programs compared to others. I've yet to see an issue with mine, and I'm running an X700 Pro (not top of the line by any means), and even the on-board X200 Plus chipset displayed well, but was a bit lacking for my taste.
You'll defi need decent RAM, and decent speed RAM, too; minimum RAM nowadays is 512MB, with 1GB being preferred.

ATI cards generally don't fog Thief well if the
fog_dist (fog distance, basically equates to fog density) is more than a certain threshold. So highly fogged missions look like shit.
In fact, NV posted shots of my latest mission, which had high fog.
(

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4118/03022007200457gv0.jpg) this shot he reduced the
fog_dist and it looks better (although not as foggy as I intended, of course) since the lines are less noticeable.
