I bought this game the other night, and it's much better than I had expected. For those who don't know, Uplink is a computer hacking game, but replaces the usual silly minigames and cyberspace with programs, servers, and traceroutes, operating in a much more realistic fashion.
For those who have played it, I've got a bit of an issue. I have two missions that require hacking into the US Social Security database, but I don't seem to have enough time. I have a 100Ghz and a 60Ghz processors, but I just barely have enough time to crack the password and disable the proxy before I get caught. It seems that having servers with admin access will increase the time it takes to trace, but the only server that has the box around it is the Uplink test machine- even ones like InterNIC where I have the admin password don't show a box. What do I need to do?
Also, is there a way to prevent a target system from revoking my username and password, and can I bounce a connection through servers not shown on the world map but shown in my server list?

IIRC it doesn't revoke your connection for a certain amount of time. You can prepare for a bir run (like a gov database) by r00ting a few corporate servers to use as bounce points. as long as you do it within 24hours, they should not be revoked.

:weird:
As to your problem, just get a list of all servers and bounce, bounce, bounce all around the world. Yes, having an admin access increases the tracing time, but (SADLY) is not necessary. I think I was having about ten bounces when doing normal missions and it was enough.
At the end, just delete the logs at one node(Probably InterNIC) and you're safe.

Most of them either revoke it as soon as I disconnect or never revoke, but I still don't get the admin access box.

Let me just throw out the concept that maybe running programs to break security is more realistic than Tron. I'm not going to say that it's realistic in absolute terms, but it's more plausible than glowing avatars running around and shooting code-beams at each other.

How do I get more servers? I can see the ones I've hacked before in my server list, but they don't show up on the map so I can't bounce through them. The main issue is that I'd like to know what exactly it takes to have the game treat the server as one I have admin status on. The Uplink test machine is one hell of a stall, and I'll take every bit I can get.

There should be a list of all servers... somewhere.

You should just get the Connection Analyiser and the moniter bypass software.
Then they don't start tracing you until you run proxy disable, or use proxy bypass (expensive and not needed really) and they never start tracing you.
Getting that software means you can ignore the hassle of making huge chains of connections to bounce though :)

Thanks a ton, I'll be sure to give that a try.
So, how do I put the IP addresses from my list onto the map?
Vraptor7 on 4/10/2008 at 20:15
That should be automatic, in your list there should be a button to the right of each entry that allows you to toggle the node's visibility on the map, see if any of those are unchecked.
One of my favourite games, now you made me want to go and load it up!

That did it Vraptor, thanks!
Since I accidentally wasted a ton of money on continually replacing my processor (trying to add a second- forgot that I need to log off for the new gateway to be installed), I decided to restart. I figured out how to secure servers (Apparently, it flags your password if you disconnect while in admin screen), so now I can get in and out without being caught, and have a legitimate password to break into the school records with. The only thing is that once I completed an assignment to give a guy better grades, my Neuromancer rating dropped to Untrustworthy. How the hell does that work?

Your Neuromancer rating depends on how many person affecting to data affecting missions you do I think.
So getting people arrested, changing results etc lowers it while getting / deleting data raises it.
It doesn't really affect anything though, its there for "fun"
