Most of them either revoke it as soon as I disconnect or never revoke, but I still don't get the admin access box.
Most likely due to being traced. Always bounce connections to your victim before you gain root access. Also may help if you only crack root but not actually access the machine (as root access will be detected). Another little trick is to connect to internic, filter for all the banks, and create an account with them all. Then use the banks plus any cracked machines as your bounce list. Of course, you should always use either internic or the Uplink test machine as your first bounce so you can remove the logs. I prefer to use the uplink box and delete all logs (since they usually aren't many anyway).
*edit*Oops read that wrong. Sorry. I'll still leave my reply though.

Ugh, apparently Log Deleter v3 wasn't enough and I got caught for clearing my criminal record, which was followed by my being disavowed by Uplink. New character time.
By the way, when I'm tracing a bank transfer, what do I need to find? I got the guy's name, but apparently that wasn't enough- do I need to crack the proxy and take a look at his stuff?
Edit: I just want to say that I'm not usually fond of puzzle-type games, but this has me hooked. Stellar gameplay, and really different to boot.

There are two traces, active traces and passive traces.
Active trace starts when you start hacking and stops when you disconnect. At the beginning it means a fine to pay, later it's instant failure.
Passive trace starts when you disconnect and you can't see it, and will reach you sooner or later unless you delete logs somewhere - it doesn't matter where.
Both last the longer the more bounces you have, so it's important to ALWAYS bounce.
Since passive tracing works backwards(From the server you hacked towards you) your first node should always be InterNIC(Or Uplink Test Server), since this is the easiest server to delete logs from and it will be the last server they will be checking, so it you will have more time to do it. After you do whatever you were paid to do, connect to InterNIC(but not directly! Bounce once from official Uplink or another high-security server for example) and delete all the forwarding logs(Your gateway IP -> the second node in your bounce chain). Log deleter v3 should be enough for a long time, but I always get v4 ASAP anyway just to be safe.
I am pretty sure that you need to bypass the proxy when hacking the banks for whatever reason other than making an account.
By the way, whenever you're tracing bank accounts etc. keep your eyes open - sometimes you find an account with, for example, a million bucks on it, which is enough for best everything and all software. Many people consider this "almost cheating" since you don't even need to take(normal) missions after that.

Yeah the best thing is that Log rewriter, that's definitely worth saving up for, it won't leave gaping holes in the logs.
catbarf on 5/10/2008 at 13:49
Koki- Yeah, I know that already, it seems that the government uses passive tracing that requires a hell of a good log deleter to avoid.

Save up and buy the top version of every bit of software, don't bother getting a middle version, as its just wasting cash, since you want the higher version later anyway.
Log Deleter V4 is the one which makes it completely untraceable I think, but it takes a while.

There should be a list of all servers... somewhere.
Right at InterNIC server.
Great hacksim indeed, although more for normal people amazed by movies about hackers than for real hackers, but they can take it as fun game as well.
Uplink has also vital gaming community, go to (
www.modlink.net). New themes, gateways, graphics upgrades, new types of missions, comprehensive guides, etc.
Question : How do I clean my criminal records, what's the name of the criminal database server? I presume it has quite tough security? At the very beginning of my career I got caught during two runs, had to pay a fine and now some employers refuse to give me jobs as I have two unauthorized access entries.
Missions which demand alteration of someone's data are so much more interesting than usual copy/delete files missions, although they apparently lower your necromancer rating.
Creating long chain of bounce points is vital at least in early missions, if I have like 10 of them, target servers with low security trace you like slugs then and you have no stress cracking/deleting/copying whatever you need.
Koki on 8/10/2008 at 09:17
I didn't like data alterations precisely because they lowered your 'necromancer' ratings.
Are you playing with the addon? Hacking LANs is pretty cool. And whose side are you on?

Oh I'm pretty much green in this so far, only Confident and I'm still learning new tools of the trade and techniques. Next thing would be how to deal with proxies - that Social security database server tracks me pretty fast even though I use 12 bounce nodes, then boom - I manage to get in and alter the data in time but it doesn't save because of restricted proxy access.
What I know about this LAN thing - you can play more copies of Uplink on separate computers? What is the purpose? And is it available in all game versions? Mine is patched to latest 1.54.
