Banks have three ways to trace you:
1) Active trace while hacking
2) Passive trace after hacking
3) Money transfer logs.
If you transfer money into your own account, you WILL be caught unless you remove the records from both the target bank, and your own bank. For this reason its easiest if you make a new bank account on the target bank, and transfer the money to that account. This way you can delete both sets of logs in the same hack, then go about deleting your IP Logs.

In my case it was passive tracing, as I just managed to get past admin password, I didn't break the enciphered code and got no access (this job was only about getting loan info about certain person anyway).
I notice that the game is quite easy at the beginning but once I reach Intermediate level it's getting gradually more difficult : suddenly there are missions with higher security targets, all of a sudden I need proxy and firewall disable soft, Decipherer and Voice Analyzer and what not - and they ain't cheap! Plus these programs beg for hardware upgrades - faster CPU for Decipherer and other programs, and faster modem can make all data transfers bloody easier too. And everybody recommends to buy the highest available version, but where I am supposed to get enough money for all that if, until now, I earned only about 1500-2500 for a mission?
Why there aren't more missions available for lower ranks than I am at the moment, so I can spare some money for necessary upgrades for the future?

Not all missions require everything. To break into Social Security you might need a proxy bypass, for a bank you'll need a firewall bypass. So buy the proxy and do SS all the time till you have money for more. Note that it's an example, I don't remember it that well.
That's sadly a bad think in Uplink; it's hard only as long as you have no idea what to do(I.e. you have no idea what defenses banks have till you try to hack one), which is kinda cheap to be honest. Once you finish a game once, it's almost impossible to get caught.

Unless you buy IP Probe which tells you that early, right?

Yeah, I found it pretty useful.

You can also make money betting on the stock market.
if you buy shares in the company who has hired you, then do the hack, the target normally drops in value and their competitor's rise when the news breaks.
You can also take out a large loan to buy the software to do the mission, or demand money up front for missions and take on 5 at once resulting in a hefty chunk of cash to do the missions with.

Holy hell, a part of the game I never knew existed. Where is the stock?

Search internic, it has all(well other than some secret) servers

God this game is hard... I still haven't beaten it. My current strategy:
-Skip tutorial. Login to Internic and make an account at every bank. Buy the password breaker only. Create a string of bounces using all links available, starting with InterNIC. Save that bounce scheme and continue adding to it every time a new link is added for a mission, so that the bounce chain includes basically every terminal.
-Do the test mission. Go to the ISS and get a bunch of missions, then do a few. Go back to ISS and buy the highest level Trace tracker and log deleter. Go back to InterNIC and delete all logs thus far except connection established/broken logs, then return to the companies from the first few missions and remove their logs.
-Continue doing missions and erasing logs until Connection Analyzer is affordable. Decypher and Decrypter may be necessary along the way.
I've tried this strategy twice. The first time, I got caught stealing money from a bank because I didn't remove the logs quickly enough and their passive trace is absurdly fast. The second time I got caught much earlier and don't know what happened. I've put 12 hours into this game and that's as far as I've made it...
Edit: nevermind, I hacked 2 banks and made it to Mage!
