Hey all. I got Deux Ex for Christmas and boy was it great! I just started again from the beginning at Realistic difficulty (played Medium the first time). That opening movie makes a lot more sense now. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
A question about the riot baton. Can it really be used to KO the bad guys with one hit? I'm not having any luck doing so, with Low Tech 1 and Combat Strength 1. Maybe I'm just not sneaking up on the bad guys well enough. <img src="graemlins/erm.gif" border="0" alt="[Erm...]" /> I was trying not to kill anyone, but ran out of stun gun chargers and tranq darts part way into level two. . . . It'd sure help if I can just figure out how to KO people with the baton!

I'm still playing through Deus Ex for the first time, on realistic, and i've always used the baton for KOs. It's annoying though, because it seems to be inexplicably selective about when it wants to work or not. I'm not sure if i'm aiming in the wrong place (usually for the top of the neck), or if i'm not close enough, or if it's something else altogether, but it seems to work about 75% of the time...
(and when it doesn't work, it just seems to whack them hamrlessly and they turn around and shoot me.)

FWIW - I use the baton in conjunction with the prod until I build up my stats.
Hit them once with the prod so they freeze, then nip around behind them and issue the coup de grace with the baton. Works 100% of the time and uses less charge than just prodding them 2 or 3 times.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm getting better at using the baton. It's tricky when they're moving, because if I screw up and take a "walking" step they whirl around and shoot me, but if I'm too slow on the attack, I only hit air.
I'll have to remember that trick of using the baton after a prod stun for the next time the bad guy doesn't go down with one prod! Must save charges! <img src="cool.gif" border="0">

Important note: If the baton blow doesn't knock them them out, they will be instantly released from tetany.

Once you know to hit between shoulder blades, one cattle prod + baton is good in beginning areas of DX.

Maybe this is plain wrong, but as far as I can tell a baton will only knock a person out if you are within a certain distance of the victem, otherwise, although it may hit them, it will just annoy them.
Skill helps as well, of course, but I htink trained should be enough for anything human if you are right next to your target.

i found to knock someone out with the baton, as long as they dont know your there and you hit them anywhere on the back they go down in one hit. hitting them in the head rarely works. the riot prod tell you in its description to aim for the torso. the tranq darts work best with a head shot i dont know why but they go down quicker. anyway thats my tips hope it helps.
P.S. this has all been thoroughly tested as i am unable to use lethal tactics. to much playing thief i suppose.

you dont have to stand up as long as you hit the back youl be fine.
