didn't valve say that they were ASKED/BEGGED by customers for something to spend their money on ? it doesn't affect the rest of the game, so I'm okay with it. this way the payers of the new valve idiot-tax are more easily spottable ingame.

The crate/key system seems particularly evil, though.
I found a crate as a random drop, but there's no way I'm going to pay €2.50 for a key to open it, and the keys can't be found in random drops - they can only be bought.
Basically, it's like a lottery where the winners have to pay rather than getting something.
Plus, the crates are lucky dips, and are more likely to contain useless common rubbish than anything actually interesting, but apparently people are still shelling out for keys just on the off-chance that their crate will contain an "exceedingly rare item", as opposed to, say, yet another Equalizer.

If I remember correctly, EA did something kind of like this with one of the Battlefield(?) games. Basically they would launch expansion packs/DLC with newer and better guns and players could either shell out the money or have even their absolute top guns be rendered inferior. People flipped no small amount of shit over that, and it amuses me how little of that is going on against Valve.

Um, but all the new items are available via the old drops system, as well as via crafting. I've found a bunch already.
The only stuff you have to pay for seems to be unusually rare hats, which generally have no gameplay purpose.

Why in the hell would people actually demand to spend money on frivolities?

Why in the hell would people actually spend money on DLCs that add an extra weapon or item to a game?
No, it's a serious question. I honestly don't get it.

OCD Gotta Catch 'Em All types I guess.
I really have no problems with this update so far. Even with the crates that need bought keys for unlocking, I can trade to other people for nice stuff like higher tier metals or a hat if I'm lucky.
The only really stupid thing are the boxes of gifts. Someone on the server I play on gave out two of the pile 'o gifts which are what...$19.99 I think? I got Gloves of Running Urgently and a Backburner. And they aren't craftable or tradable...so yeah, they're a big waste of money.

Yeah, people on my server were using those piles of gifts too. Can't believe they paid €20 for the privilege of... giving people items they already had, at at best could find anyway by playing a little more?
I'll have to see what I can trade my crate for, even if I almost feel a little bad giving it to someone knowing they'll have to spend money to unlock it and probably end up with an Equalizer...
