The main issue for me with doing your first playthrough as a Malk is that the other clans feel bland in comparison afterwards. Also, playing a Malk after you've played another clan gives you some awesome moments, especially with all the subtle hints you actually do get as a Malk (and only as a Malk) about the plot and various npcs.
But understanding what happens if you do play the game as a Malk the first time should be no issue, unless you have trouble following the plot of Wolfenstein 3D.

I'd skip Malkavian the first time. It may be coherent and playable, but you're likely to enjoy the insanity more on a second play through, when you know enough about the plot you won't have to fight against the strange dialogue.
Plus, it's considerably more entertaining then the other clans, so doing it first makes it real hard to play something else the second time.
Still, the clan I'd really avoid starting with is Ventrue. About half way through the game does an epic screw job on the Ventrue - a lengthy, combat heavy sequence where the only blood/healing sources available are rats, which you can't eat.

My first play through was as Tremere and I was happy with it. They get the bonus for magic, which I used a lot of; they're the "academic" clan; and I just liked the look of them... They're treated as outsiders by the other clans, not for being ugly, but being mysterious and secretive even by vampire standards (and for literally being outsiders).

And for cheating their way into the club, don't forget.

So this is actually about Bloodlines? VTM usually stands for the 'redemption' ARPG, no?
bloody semantics

VTM stands for the Vampire The Masquerade. I thought it was obvious which specific VTM scenario he was referring to based on his post, since there's nothing VTM related that lots of people (who aren'tf gothy LARPer scumbags) like besides Bloodlines.

You can't pick your clan in Redemption, so only Bloodlines makes sense.

I'd second the suggestion of "anyone except Nosferatu or Malkavian on your first playthrough".
Malkavian is very different and you'll miss a lot of its brilliance if you don't know the story already, and Nosferatu is very hard to play for the first time (since you're not allowed to be seen by most mortals), and also limits a lot of the social interaction you can have.

Your best best when playing for the first time is anyone other than a Malk or a Nosferatu, because they alter the game in fundamental ways.
I went with Toreador my first playthrough.
He speaks the truth. Love Vampire, played Bloodlines 5 times, Toreador is the easiest one for a first timer. Enjoy the game, its worth it.

Oh right, you're Brujah from the get go, my memory was a bit fuzzy.
And anyway, what I meant and didn't word well enough for Jason Moyer to understand is that Redemption was there first so "Vampire The Masquerade" is by default the first game. It's like when people say SS and mean Serious Sam, or say MW2 and mean Modern Warfare 2. Ugh!
bloodlines was p.cool anyway so peace cool dawgs yo(cooler than redemption that's for sure)
