Except that's inaccurate in describing Bloodlines; only the Sabbat hotel run and the end-game really fit that concept.

I have started as a Toreador, and am up to the first boss, the asian vampire guy, and he is kicking my ass. Would one of the more melee focused clans (Baja, Gangrel) be better for a newbie?
I'm playing as a Tremere and with Blood Purge the asian vampire was a piece of cake. In fact, I'm now in Chinatown and up to now I found the game very easy.

Heh yeh the 2nd time I tried that guy I actually remembered to use blood buff, then made short work of him with the tyre iron.

The shin gunto is my weapon of choice through most of the game, getting replaced only when I find a proper katana.
Though I do switch to the fire axe when fighting zombies. It just feels... right.

It's been a while since I've played (might be time to replay again!), but I seem to recall doing runs with each of unarmed, mêlée and ranged weapons, and all three were viable.
I kind of wish there was a way to stay in first person with the mêlée weapons, the third-person switch was a bit odd. Then again, the whole mêlée combat was almost a bit... comical, with ridiculous blood splashes and such.

One of Wesp's patches changed it so that you stay in first-person when melee attacking. I forget if he left it that way or changed it back when people complained.

It was optional, IIRC. I have a really vague memory of trying it and it being horrible though. So I guess my actual wish is for the game to have been designed with being able to fight in first person in mind, rather than a hack that doesn't really work well.

It's a shame the developer never managed a sequel. Replayed it recently and remained impressed, especially with the voice actors and dialogue. Not having the game crash every 10 minutes (as if did frequently on an older machine), allowed me to really enjoy it.

Based on what I read, the first-person melee is mostly useless because we don't see our weapon.

It probably has the best voice acting and dialogue I've ever heard in a game. And never has a game made me laugh the way this one does. It's brilliant.
