Various Food Items.... Any Practical Use? - by Void

General Question for all Taffers...
I've played Thief and Thief2 for the past several years, and they're still my favorite games. (Haven't yet got to play Thief: DS 'cause my stupid comp won't run it) and I've had a question burning in my mind every time I do a Thiefly run-through, which is this:
Do the various food items you can get (apples, bread, cheese, cucumbers) *DO* anything?

If I remember correctly, eating the food will restore some of your health points.

I don't doubt your word, but why isn't it mentioned in the handbooks or in any of the FAQs I've found, or in any of the Walkthroughs I've managed to consult? You'd think it would be important information, even if they only give you *one* health point back...

Yeah, you may have to eat 1-3 food items to get one health point back. I'm not sure if some food heals you more than others though (for example deer leg vs cucumber)

Not sure you *can* eat a deer's leg, at least in Thief1... You can pick them up but they don't go into your inventory.

Here's the deal, fellow taffers: In T1/TGold, the food does nothing at all but gives you something to take and make sound effects with.:p
Of course, that doesn't include plumsies, the fruit in Escape!, which does add much-needed health.
In T2, however, all the food gives you one-quarter of a health point, so you might see an increase if you eat 1-4 food items, depending on the actual number of points you have (5.00, 4.75, 4.50, 4.25, etc.).
And there's a glitch in your game if deer legs don't go in your inventory. It's funny that Garrett can eat it in one bite, and that it makes the apple crunching sound.

I have Thief Gold. Hopefully that won't make a difference.
When I pick up a deer leg, it counts as a "held" item like a bowl, bottle or vase. i.e., you can put it down or throw it, but not much else.

I'm pretty sure that you were able to eat deer legs in Thief Gold as well... I haven't played the game for years though. Hopefully someone else with TG could confirm this.
Are you playing the original missions or some fan missions? Perhaps in some fan missions you can't eat them, because the author has changed their properties.
Have you installed any FMs? Your Thief installation (or the gamesys file actually, dark.gam if you're playing original missions) could be somehow messed up in that case.

Yeah, all three TDP/Gold & TMA will let you eat deer legs like any other food, so something's glitchy if you can't.

I don't have any fm's for Thief Gold... tho I do have the T2X fangame for T2.
Update:
I went back into Thief Gold today and, instead of restarting from a low-level game like I normally do (I usually start TG from a slightly higher level to avoid going through the simple Bafford mission) I hit "New Game" at the main menu... and in the Bafford kitchen, I ran across a deer leg and it now works fine.
I eated it.
Apparently it was a glitch of some kind.
