Can anyone recommend a good video capture software application for capturing game play? I have been using Fraps for years, but just recently it has stopped working. So I need something else, preferably free for doing my video captures.

For a good year, I ran a minecraft-based educational Youtube channel. For that, I used (
http://www.bandicam.com/) Bandicam. It's very versatile and can automatically record in a whole bunch of different formats (the filesize and cpu usage are much lower than Fraps too, with no visible loss in quality). There's a free version which has a 10 minute capture limit, as well as a watermark at the top. And the full version is $40 (or $60 for two PCs).
I haven't tested it with Thief yet (I'll give it a go and let you know how it is when I get home). I remember having some issues while recording minecraft on fullscreen - namely that the software would sometimes bug and corrupt the video if another window popped up mid-recording (e.g. restart your computer for important updates or sticky keys), but otherwise I never had any issues with it.
EDIT: Just remembered that I began a TDP let's play - search on youtube for MrArcherMC, there're a couple of videos up there. I don't have a link as I'm in work at the moment. It's been a while, but if I remember rightly I was quite pleased with the level of visibility (normally youtube does terrible things to dark video captures).

Thanks. Please check it out if you would. Before I pop $40, I'd like to know it will do the job. I can't use the free version as the watermark is a deal killer.

i use OBS (open broadcaster software) FREE
works with basicly every game if you can get it to run in a window (or the gamecapture feature is compatible)
the files are also very small
or dxtory 40$ (hard to set up but supports multiple audio channels<3 )

(
http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html) Debut by NHS Software is free and has good features, but unfortunately I've not been able to get it to work with Thief. I haven't tried running Thief in windowed mode, though.

what if you re-installed Fraps? My installation of Fraps stopped working some time ago and I had to download & install the latest version that works with Vista.

Camtasia is a good capturing software. You can use it similar to fraps, but it does much more.

I've tried that with no success unfortunately. I've also tried Dxtory, which simple doesn't open. Fraps opens and just doesn't record anymore.
UPDATE: Windows Update giveth and Windows Update taketh away. Fraps was lost after a Windows update, and last night another Windows Update restored it to working condition. Yay!
For those other who might still be interested in video capturing software, this is the list of offerings I have found (aside from those listed above) which I was going to look further into:
(
http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm) FastOne
(
http://ohsoft.net/product_ocam.php) oCam
(
http://www.fox-magic.com/screenvirtuoso.php) ScreenVirtuoso Pro
(
http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html) Debut Professional
But now I don't need them. :)
