I remember seeing pictures of a mini silhouette studio in the final days tribute.

Well the silhouettes(from 1:07 and on) were made, as has already been stated, with actors against a greenscreen in a studio. But the parts before that could quite possibly be made by a single person with a drawing tablet or a scanner, plus copies of Flash, Premiere and Photoshop, and a whole lot of artistic talent. And patience.
