Interesting, because lots of games typically want you to install them in program files.
True, however a lot of game for these forums came before Vista and its heavily locked down program files folders. Installing outside of the program files folder for Vista gets round the issues that both GarrettLoader and DarkLoader are effectively doing something Microsoft doesn't want happening i.e. 1 program changing files for another program in a protected location. Unfortunately there isn't really many other ways to deal with it on Vista due to its application virtualization and user access control mechanisms. Basically meaning vista fools programs into thinking they are accessing files and registry entries from one location (program files) but really they are accessing files from another location (the users virtual store folders), which in turn causes problems if running at different access levels or as different users.
I always installed to D:\program files any games or programs I install on XP and win 2k as I found some programs will still run happily from that drive after a rebuild of windows (i.e. no real registry entries). However with my Vista VM I'm trying not to install to Program Files as I really have the application virtualization.

I see. That sucks. Another reason for me to not like Vista.:erg: I never made the switch, so I don't know a lot about Vista. In fact, when I bought my laptop online many months ago, I opted for it to have windows xp pro on it.:cheeky:
