Hmmm... My concern would be the game clock running while doing the in-game CamVator idea. I'd take my chances with running a video with the NVCutsceneTrap. The game clock pauses while the video is playing.

One could create a spy-cam type setup where the player view is locked to looking at a custom texture with the readable on it. Considering that Thief's meta UI runs at 640x480, it wouldn't even have to be a very high-res texture.
EDIT: Yup, just checked, a single 512x512 texture would give you the same resolution as a standard readable.
