Yes, I am enjoying it a lot.
A lot of the gameplay feels very fresh, and there's lots of clever details, like, for instance, the oil spills. When you step in an oil spill your character starts gliding around, making them harder to control BUT ALSO it makes you much faster. That means it's both an environmental hazard AND a power up! If you're trying to fight an enemy or navigate the environment with any grace you don't wanna step in one of these, but if you're in a rush to get somewhere? Jump right in! :D
Also the soundtrack is bangin.

I have done it, I have beaten VOID BASTARDS.
And it turns out... I was the void bastard all along. :|

I've been playing the game as well.

Unlocked a heap of stuff. I seem to be on a roll with my current player as I've lasted about 20+ jumps. On all the rest I'd only last for a few. Excellent game.

Now that you've played it, icemann, how fair do you think the Mooncrash comparison was? I know that comparison kind of soured you on Void Bastards, at least initially.

And you would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those pesky... oh, you did get away with it.

To me it's not really like Mooncrash. You have randomized traits per run (which you can improve later), you get to keep your gear but not the current ammo on next play through.
In Mooncrash there is a very restrictive time limit in place and that limit gets harder as you unlock more character slots, which = greater tension. VB does have a time limit but you can find oxygen machines which give you more (for that mission only) and you can find upgrade parts to give you a permanent upgrade to it. So time is far less a factor.
In MC you use the weapons you find and (from memory) start off with 1 weapon. In VB your restricted to 2 weapons, but it can be whatever you like once you've unlocked/built it.
So there are similarities sure, but they are 2 very different games. There are more differences than similarities so I'd not really compare them. Plus your progress (for that run) is saved when you quit, which you can come back to the next time you run the game.
The only annoying bit in VB is that when you die, its straight back to the start of the galaxy. But you keep whats unlocked, so its more a minor annoyance than a negative.

I think this is the tagline for the entire game.
It's like Mooncrash but different. It's like Freedom Force/XIII but different.
It's like System Shock 2 but different. It's like FTL but different.
I think I'm still missing a few too.

The most addictive thig here imo is the risk-reward thinking between the ships. You need part x to craft thing y and it's on a ship z nearby, but it's full of monsters and you're way past half of your health, for example.
But the gameplay is rather average. Shooting is okay. Ship layouts seem to be randomized a bit, but they still look samey after some time, ant there's basically no lighting, everything looks super flat. So you either scan the bland environment for the green glowy bits, because that's where loot is, or you go to the helm, download the ship map, and then you go scan for loot, because that's the only optimal gameplay path.

The ship with the med machine off to the left as soon as you enter, I've seen quite a few times now. That more than the others.

So I reached the end of the game. Man I'm burned out.

So I read somewhere that you could beat this game in 10 hours. It took me 40 (according to Steam), and did that in a week. On one hand I can completely get how one could do that, as with the right character / right traits and some moderately upgraded weapons you can get really far in the game with no deaths at all. Especially once you know how to take down every enemy. The one that took down my best character (which was my 3rd one of 4), was a Zec. If I'd known that grenades were your best friend against them, I'd have been fine. But I didn't so died quite quick on 1st encountering them, which REALLY set me back for a few days. On him I'd had the "sticky fingers" trait which is so damn useful, since it auto picks up any grabbable items nearby you.
With him dead, my fast run through the game slowed dramatically (I did 3 of the 5 quests with him within the first 2 days), and the game became a real slog. Needing to farm resources, or take risks on going to lower depths to get things quicker I was very wary of after that death. Never died again mind, but yeah. A few close calls, but I made it out alive all other times.
This is an excellent game, and I can very much see the parallels to System Shock in it. I'm not sure if I'd do a full play through again though. You have to do so much farming of the same levels over and over again (if your gears not up to scratch), or take the chance at lower depths at getting items your after right away. It's just that once you have a good character built up, if you lose them it really fucks you up for a good while. So for me, I was quite wary of taking said risks, so did easier stuff for a good while instead (after the death of the 3rd, prior to that I was jumping in head first and was massacring everything I went to, until that Zec encounter). If my 3rd hadn't died, I'd have beat the game within the next day or so definitely. Instead he died, and so it took me nearly a full week.
So as I said, excellent game. Just be sure to not do what I did (I went in blind on purpose, did not read guides or anything, until the death of my 3rd). Read up on the enemies, get some good traits. I HIGHLY recommend sticky fingers if your lucky and find it on one of the machines as I did, or via character generation, it will help you out more than any other trait imo.
8/10 for me. Levels get very samey after a while. Though the game does throw some curve balls to mix things up, like completely pitch black decks, hazards all over, having all the security be allied with you etc etc.
Most annoying enemy - Those damn floating heads. Until I got my weapons upgraded up to max, those damn things would kick my ass, and I'd have to high tail it out of vessels on getting zerged by them. They move about so fast, that their hard to hit (keep your distance if you can, much easier to hit), so I lost A LOT of ammo trying to take them on. Once I had max upgrades on my weapons I had far less issues with them. Still damn annoying.
Those little guys who run around swearing at you, were annoying as hell as well. More just for the audio.
